"RAINBOW AT MIDNIGHT", I don't know the song, the lyrics are lovely. Sorry about the loss of your Daddy. I am sure your dear Dad was looking down and very proud of all of you for the beautiful celebration of his life.

"Amazing Grace, Ave Maria and Elgar's Nimrod remain firm favourites, he says. And although he concedes that humanist and non-religious ceremonies are becoming more common, religious songs "make a service more of a participation event". "

Yes, they have some substance - unlike the contemporay "Christian" songs of today.

"They better not play Highway to Hell at my funeral!"

Don't be surprised if that becomes popular with fellow unbelievers left behind.

Hey, even if they did sing that, they don't make the ultimate judgment on where you wind up.

I want The Mamas & The Papas version of Rodgers & Hart's "My Heart Stood Still" playing softly in the background.

Translation of the Latin text of Faure's Requiem (tr. Arnold vander Nat).

INTROITUS
Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine,
et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Te decet hymnus, Deus, in Sion,
et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem.
Exaudi orationem meam;
ad te omnis caro veniet.

Rest eternal grant them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine on them.
To thee praise is due, O God, in Zion,
and to thee vows are recited in Jerusalem.
Hear my prayer;
unto thee all flesh shall come.

KYRIE [in Greek]
Kyrie eleison.
Christe eleison.
Kyrie eleison.

Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

OFFERTORIUM

Domine Jesu Christe, Rex gloriae,
libera animas defunctorum
de poenis inferni,
et de profundo lacu.
Libera eas de ore leonis,
ne absorbeat eas tartarus,
ne cadant in obscurum.
Hostias et preces tibi,
Domine, laudis offerimus.
Tu suscipe pro animabus illis
quarum hodie memoriam facimus.
Fac eas, Domine,
de morte transire ad vitam,
quam olim Abrahae promisisti,
et semini eius.

Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory,
deliver the souls of the dead
from punishment in the inferno,
and from the infernal lake.
Deliver them from the mouth of the lion,
lest the abyss swallow them up,
lest they fall into the darkness.
Sacrifices and prayers to thee,
O Lord, we offer with praise.
O receive them for the souls of those
whom today we commemorate.
Make them, O Lord,
to pass from death to life,
as thou of old hast promised Abraham
and his seed.

SANCTUS

Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus,
Dominus Deus Sabaoth.
Pleni sunt coeli et terra
gloria tua.
Hosanna in excelsis.

Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God of hosts.
The heavens and earth are filled
with thy glory.
Hosanna in the highest.

PIE JESU

Pie Jesu Domine,
dona eis requiem,
requiem sempiternam.

Merciful Lord Jesus,
grant them rest,
rest everlasting.

ANGUS DEI

Agnus Dei,
qui tollis peccata mundi,
dona eis requiem,
requiem sempiternam.

Lamb of God,
who taketh away the sins of the world,
Grant them rest,
rest everlasting.

LUX AETERNA

Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine,
cum sanctis tuis in aeternum,
quia pius es.
Requiem aeternam, dona eis, Domine,
et lux perpetua luceat eis.

Let light eternal shine on them, O Lord,
with thy saints forever,
for thou art merciful.
Rest eternal grant them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine on them.

LIBERA ME

Libera me, Domine,
de morte aeterna,
in die illa tremenda
quando coeli movendi sunt et terra,
dum veneris judicare
saeculum per ignem
Tremens factus sum ego, et timeo
dum discussio venerit,
atque ventura ira.
Dies illa, dies irae,
calamitatis et miseriae,
dies magna et amara valde.
Requiem aeternam, dona eis, Domine,
et lux perpetua luceat eis.

Deliver me, O Lord,
from eternal death,
on that fearful day
when the heavens are moved and the earth
when thou shalt come to judge
the world through fire.
I am made to tremble, and I fear,
when the desolation shall come,
and also the coming wrath.
That day, the day of wrath,
calamity, and misery,
that terrible and exceedingly bitter day.
Rest eternal grant them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine on them.

IN PARADISUM

In paradisum deducant te angeli,
in tuo adventu
suscipiant te martyres,
et perducant te
in civitatem sanctam Jerusalem.
Chorus angelorum te suscipiat,
et cum Lazaro quondam paupere
aeternam habeas requiem.

May the angels lead you into paradise,
may the martyrs receive you
in your coming,
and may they guide you
into the holy city, Jerusalem.
May the chorus of angels receive you
and with Lazarus once poor
may you have eternal rest.

What is wrong with with this, I ask?

Isn't It Grand Boys
Traditional

Look at the coffin, with golden handles
Isn't it grand, boys, to be bloody-well dead?

Let's not have a sniffle, let's have a bloody-good cry
And always remember: The longer you live
The sooner you'll bloody-well die

Look at the flowers, all bloody withered
Isn't it grand, boys, to be bloody-well dead?

Let's not have a sniffle, let's have a bloody-good cry
And always remember: The longer you live
The sooner you'll bloody-well die

Look at the mourners, bloody-great hypocrites
Isn't it grand, boys, to be bloody-well dead?

Let's not have a sniffle, let's have a bloody-good cry
And always remember: The longer you live
The sooner you'll bloody-well die

Look at the preacher, a bloody-nice fellow
Isn't it grand, boys, to be bloody-well dead?

Let's not have a sniffle, let's have a bloody-good cry
And always remember: The longer you live
The sooner you'll bloody-well die

Look at the widow, bloody-great female
Isn't it grand, boys, to be bloody-well dead?

Let's not have a sniffle, let's have a bloody-good cry
And always remember: The longer you live
The sooner you'll bloody-well die

Yeah I remember that song.

Wonder why they wrote this line in there?

"Never been a sinner I never sinned"

"My mother has requested Spirit in the Sky. ugh"

LOL, have not heard that song in years. If that is what your Mom wants...go with it, hopefully not for a long time.

"But I’ve got a friend in jesus
So ya know that when I die
It’s gonna set me up with the spirit in the sky"

It's very nice.

I don't have any problems with that.

I suppose I am an odd ball but I don't find death funny or something to be laughed at. It should be a respectful occasion, mentioning something about the person and hoping God took the person in to heaven. From what I am seeing here it's being made into a joke.

So I guess Dies Iræ is out, huh?

Here's an English translation:

The day of wrath, that day
which will reduce the world to ashes,
as foretold by David and the Sybil.

What terror there will be,
when the Lord will come
to judge all rigorously!

The trumpet, scattering a wondrous sound
among the graves of all the lands,
will assemble all before the Throne.

Death and Nature will be astounded
when they see a creature rise again
to answer to the Judge.

The book will be brought forth
in which all deeds are noted,
for which humanity will answer.

When the judge will be seated,
all that is hidden will appear,
and nothing will go unpunished.

Alas, what will I then say?
To what advocate shall I appeal,
when even the just tremble?

O king of redoutable majesty,
who freely saves the elect,
save me, o fount of piety!

Remember, merciful Jesus,
that I am the cause of your journey,
do not lose me on that day.

You wearied yourself in finding me.
You have redeemed me through the cross.
Let not such great efforts be in vain.

O judge of vengeance, justly
make a gift of your forgiveness
before the day of reckoning.

I lament like a guilty one.
My faults cause me to blush,
I beg you, spare me.

You who have absolved Mary,
and have heard the thief's prayer,
have also given me hope.

My prayers are not worthy,
but you, o Good One, please grant freely
that I do not burn in the eternal fire.

Give me a place among the sheep,
separate me from the goats
by placing me at your right.

Having destroyed the accursed,
condemned them to the fierce flames,
Count me among the blessed.

I prostrate myself, supplicating,
my heart in ashes, repentant;
take good care of my last moment!

That tearful day,
when from the ashes shall rise again
sinful man to be judged.
Therefore pardon him, o God.

Merciful Lord Jesus,
give them rest.

Amen

When I was a kid, this song was played at EVERY Catholic funeral, but I haven't heard it in years now. I hope to have it played at my own funeral (in the original Latin).

Regards,

Thanks for the kind thoughts. This time of year is kind of difficult, because it was about this time last year that daddy was diagnosed with lung cancer.

After we found out it was terminal, some of my friends told me that the main thing was to never leave anything left unsaid. Although he already knew it, I told him many, many times during his last days what a wonderful dad he had been to me. I wasn't working at the time, so I was able to spend alot of time with him during his last days. Thanks to the angels from hospice, he was able to pass in the same room at our family homeplace, that he grew up in as a child.

I still miss him so much. He was such a wonderful man, and friend to me. He was the type who would give a person shirt off of his back.

I would give almost anything to have one more minute with him. But he is in a better place now.

In the past few years I've attend a few backwoods Ozark funerals at which a local Gospel group did the singing from behind a screen. The down to Earth mountain sound tore your heart out and went a long way toward getting the grieving done. I sure would like to get a recording of it because you wont hear it on the radio.

"I would give almost anything to have one more minute with him. But he is in a better place now."

Yes, your Dad is in a better place now. Many of us know this, but it doesn't always make it easy for those of us who are missing them. Like your Dad, my Mom had cancer (esophageal) and was at home with her loved ones when she passed away. Miss my Mom more than words can say, as I miss my Dad and brother too, they both passed away in March, tough time of the year. I hold on to the wonderful memories I have of all of them. I don't know how folks without faith handle losing loved ones.

Take Care and God Bless

I don't either. I'm sorry to hear of the loss of your loved ones. Guess we just have to go on and try to live life to it's fullest, until we all meet again.
