4) As a result of all this, people like Fenris6 (and, to be fair, several others on this thread) feel the right move for the GOP in 2008 is to kick the pro-lifers to the curb with a pro-abortion candidate. Absolutely stunning...

No. Whats stunning is that some pro-lifers (not me) do not understand whats at stake. Abortion is NOT an issue the President can effect. The issues he CAN affect are the GWOT, Nuclear Proliferation, and Immigration. Those are the issues that will affect our very survival in the next decade. Abandon a candidate because she doesn't tow the pro-choice line, and you abandon any hope of affecting real change re abortion in the future. That is short-sighted.

Evidently you have not followed President Bush's time in office very carefully. He is the most pro life POTUS we have ever had and it shows in what he has done.

Abortion is NOT an issue the President can effect.

A president will either try to appoint to the courts a strict constructionist, or that president will appoint a Laurence-Tribe-type who unabashedly brags about activism.

That is one very good effect. Other effects the President can exert include those on military hospital abortions, UN birth control stuff, etc. Also, if the congress passes extraordinary legislation like partial-birth abortion, the president can sign or not.

There are a lot of little things a president does.
