Real news for Stewart: Wife arrested
Jon Stewart could be forgiven if he arrived a little late to yesterday's taping of "The Daily Show." He was busy getting his wife, Tracey McShane, out of jail. The normally wisecracking comic looked understandably anxious as he waited while his handcuffed sweetheart spent close to five hours being booked for driving with a suspended license.
McShane, 36, was driving through Central Park around 11 a.m. when she was pulled over for a moving violation, police confirmed to us.
Stewart's spokesman, Matt Labov, said: "She wasn't speeding. But the police discovered that she had a suspended license. She didn't even realize it. She paid a ticket last week. But apparently her check hadn't been processed."
Following procedure, cops impounded her car, cuffed her, loaded her into a squad car and took her to Central Booking.
There, police sources said, she was fingerprinted, posed for a mug shot and held while cops checked to see if there were any outstanding warrants for the arrest of the mother of 8-month-old Nathan Stewart....(excerpt)

You are correct, they were following their procedure.
Once again, law enforcement does not write the laws - they ENFORCE them - even if they do not agree with them. If someone has a problem with a particular law they need to take it up with the legislature.

The comments both of you have made regarding his wife's appearance is typical of the sludge comments that appear on DU on a regular basis.
I would hope that we are better then that here at FR.

I spent 26 years as prosecutor out on Long Island. Believe me, 511s are a pain to prosecute, but arrest is the only thing that slows any of these guys down. Unlike Mrs. Stewart, most of these clowns drive $200 clunkers with no Ins. (they leave them in impound rather than pick 'em up. Most of these guys have more than one suspension. I supervised a unit of police and ADAs, where we went after folks with no less than 10 active suspensions. A couple were over 50. If this was her first suspension, I'm sure she'll remember the ticket next time.

Since when does it take ANY government agency that long to process a check? Whatever.

In NY, they make it clear that the DMV can suspend your license for administrative reasons (like not getting your mailed-in parking violation fine payment) without notifying you.

"The state trooper told me he couldn't let me drive off with a suspended license. Of course he also told me if I were to wait until he went down the road and then drove off there wasn't much he could do but also recommended getting the license fixed the next day which I did."Intelligent and compassionate officer. He was covering his butt.

- not a big fan, but he can be pretty funny sometimesI used to be a fan, before he drank the DU koolaid and ceased to be as funny. He's a talent, with great comedic timing and expression. But I haven't been able to watch since he turned from comedian to a cheap shot spitballer during the election. He'd be great with better material.

Here's a news flash for all three of ya - it was a joke you morons. Take this as a heads up that you can't identify humor and stop embarrasing yourselves.

I agree ... it is extreme for a suspended license
BTW ... I didn't know Jon Stuart changed his name
http://www.jonstewart.net/bio/
Name at Birth: Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz. Note: Most sources incorrectly list Jon's middle name as Stewart. We have confirmed that Stuart is the correct spelling.

The only one that needs to be embarrassed is yourself.
And if your gonna try your hand at humor, you might learn the rules:
Rule # two - If you have to explain your joke, don't make it in the first place.
