The most important idea in the essay:

"If Marxism is the delusion that one can run society purely on altruism and collectivism, then libertarianism is the mirror-image delusion that one can run it purely on selfishness and individualism. Society in fact requires both individualism and collectivism, both selfishness and altruism, to function."

Sounds to me like a preemptive shot against people that are PO'ed with the lack of cojones displayed by the current Republican party.

Woops. Sorry about that. I forgot to check before posting it. It was so recent that it did not occur to me it could have already been posted.

The most fundamental problem with libertarianism is very simple: freedom, though a good thing, is simply not the only good thing in life.

No, but it's the one hardest to hold onto.
It's the one without which the others are valueless.
It's the one Governments, ideologies and religions most endanger.

No, I'm not a libertarian of any stripe.
I'm a Goldwater Republican and a pragmatist, and I know that you can't turn your back on any large organization, no matter what it claims, or even believes, it's intentions are.

I decline to allow libertarians the sophistical trick of using a vulgar libertarianism to agitate for what they want by defending a refined version of their doctrine when challenged philosophically. We’ve seen Marxists pull that before.

And Marxism, however refined, is still always wrong.

What this really amounts to is an assertion that he is entitled to attack strawmen.

Libertarians need to be asked some hard questions. What if a free society needed to draft its citizens in order to remain free?

It's never happened in American history.

What if it needed to limit oil imports to protect the economic freedom of its citizens from unfriendly foreigners?

Again, this has never happened. Oil import restrictions in hte past only depleted our our own supplies faster; while keeping prices higher.

What if it needed to force its citizens to become sufficiently educated to sustain a free society?

What if we need to make people wear their underwear on the outside to make sure they change them everyday? I trust American parents to educate their own children, not the NEA-dominated government school system.

What if it needed to deprive landowners of the freedom to refuse to sell their property as a precondition for giving everyone freedom of movement on highways?

What if we rely on voluntary exchange and a market economy, instead of relying on the wisdom and good will of bureaucrats and special interests who may want to take your land for all sorts of "public" purposes.

What if it needed to deprive citizens of the freedom to import cheap foreign labor in order to keep out poor foreigners who would vote for socialistic wealth redistribution?

Well, if we did, which of the government parties are we going to rely on to do this...the Democrats? The Republicans? At least libertarians would not be rolling out a red carpet of social benefits that acts as a magnet for foreign parasites.

LP nutjobs are Dems that believe in gun rights. Once you commit that to memory, you'll understand all there is to know about these swishballs, and totally write them off.

If you're too good for the GOP, there ain't no party good enough for you, LP voter!
