The La Crosse man who's asked the state to allow hunters to kill stray cats says he's been getting death threats.
Mark Smith told La Crosse police he's gotten angry phone calls and messages at work and at home.
Police reports say one call made while Smith was working at the La Crosse Fire Department suggested it should be "open season on firefighters." Another woman told Smith that if the state Legislature approved his request Smith would be hunted down and killed.
Smith has asked the Wisconsin Conservation Congress to vote on his proposal at an April eleventh meeting. That vote would be advisory. The Legislature would have to consider the proposal before cats could be hunted.
Smith has proposed that any cat not under the owner's direct control or wearing a collar should be considered fair game for hunters with small-game licenses.
I agree and I love cats. The problem is the irresponsible owners who compound the problem by not neutering their pets, or by dumping unwanted pets instead of accepting responsibility.
It breaks my heart to see the growing stray animal population of cats AND dogs. A quick and painless death (not that we know if death is painless) is certainly preferable to being hit by a car or poisoned.
There would still be the problem of, say, my cats getting out of the house accidently (which will not ever happen, I hope) and they are electronically tagged, and do not wear collars.
I'm not crazy about the pet cats whose owners let them roam the neighborhood, but I don't want to shoot them. I also don't want to see them hit by a car, and believe me, cats mostly don't have a lot of sense about looking both ways before crossing streets.
(=^..^=)
Nah! Thirty 10 year old boys armed with Crosman 760's.
a .177 pellet out a Crosman 760 makes little noise too!
LMAO
Agree.
Main problem is I dont have a Crosman but do have a single shot Marlin.

Failure to neuter and spay and dumping all fill me with rage as well.
Thanks for the laugh!
Hee hee.
This cat took action.
This has to be Voted on? I shoot cats all the time, along with an occassional dog.
Me thinks thou art chumming the Freeper water. I, for one, newbie though I am, will not rise to your bait.
Chummer.
Chummer.
If people would be responsible....there would be no more homeless cats looking for someone to help them.
ha ha ha ha ha. whew.
The ninja cat accepts his assignment He now hunts Mark Smith with grim determination"
This is excellent, witty humor!
There are 2 things I don't understand about this. First, stray cats can kill birds, but stray dogs can kill humans. Second, if one of his hunting dogs got out and was shot by someone else, would he understand?
I'll bet the real story here is that his ex-wife is a cat lover!
You are bad. A bad, bad person. But, I think you too are a chummer.
We "adopted" a stray female just over a year ago. A few months later, she brought us a surprise - four kittens. We kept one and found homes for the others. Those two cats keep me in stitches. It's been years since I was around cats, but they are curious animals.
