Suicide likely in shooting death

By Greg Botonis, Staff Writer

PALMDALE -- Homicide detectives suspect suicide in a shooting that prompted deputies and a special-weapons team to surround a Palmdale mobile home park.
After questioning the occupant of the home where the man died Wednesday night, sheriff's officials said Thursday that their investigation is focusing on suicide.

"After interviewing (the occupant), coupled with an initial coroner report, detectives believe that the victim committed suicide," said Deputy Tania Plunkett of the sheriff's Headquarter's Bureau.

Before any decision, however, homicide investigators are waiting for results of an autopsy. The name of the 45-year-old victim, a visitor at the mobile home park, was not immediately released.

Neighbors called to report hearing gunshots just after 8 p.m. Wednesday at Sierra Vista Mobile Home Park in the 3200 block of East Avenue R. Believing a gunman was inside the home, deputies surrounded it and called out a special-weapons team.

When deputies entered the home, the 64-year-old occupant was gone. He surrendered to Palmdale sheriff's deputies the following morning after learning they were looking for him.

Detectives released the man after questioning him. Deputies have not said why he left the location after the shooting.
