Does the Israel Defense Forces believe incoming recruits and soldiers who play Dungeons and Dragons are unfit for elite units? Ynetnews has learned that 18-year-olds who tell recruiters they play the popular fantasy game are automatically given low security clearance.
"They're detached from reality and suscepitble to influence," the army says.
Fans of the popular role-playing game had spoken of rumors of this strange policy by the IDF, but now the army has confirmed that it has a negative image of teens who play the game and labels them as problematic in regard to their draft status....

I would counter that those (of us) who play D&D and other paper RPG games would be better elite unit material, since we are more comfortable with "out-of-the-box" thinking. Many of these games are ridculously complex, and take a considerable amount of concentration and intelligence to play well, not to mention spatial visualization skills, strategy, and teamwork.
Ridiculous. Elves, for one thing, are automatically immune to charm person and charm-type spells.
(joke stolen from FARK.com)
I played some D&D when I was a kid, but was more into GDW's products than TSR's. Really enjoyed "Twilight:2000".
I held a TS the whole time I was active duty and was read on for SCI my last year.
The Army didn't ask about games, and I didn't tell.
At last! Now a way for secular Israelis to avoid military service just like the so-called religious students!
Dungeons and Dinopinoids.....
Play a little D&D huh? I'm gonna have to ask you to step over there with the flat feet folks and the guys with severe asthma.
Their loss. An 18 Constitution, Boots of Stealth, and a +4 Uzi would kick ass in any engagement.
I did a little bit, also did a little Twilight 2000 myself.
Moved out into just plain wargames (computer, board, and miniature) as most guys do as they age.
I played it in college, but only during weekends when I was too poor to buy beer.
Yup.
I moved into Victory Games' "Fleet" series and "Nato: The Next War in Europe" in middle-late '80s. Was enjoying "Operational Art of War", I believe by Talonsoft, until recently but it doesn't work on latest Windows OS. Had alot of fun with "Panzer General" too.
Just bought Shrapnel Games' "Armored Task Force" and getting my a$$ kicked...
I'm playing the RomeTotalRealism mod of Rome: Total War now.
Have played some War in the Pacific (waiting for next patch) and keep meaning to play more of the Combat Mission series (and play online) but I never get around to it.
Check out my website: http://www.aethertraveller.com. I'm thinking you might enjoy it...
Yeah, but they're likely to stop in the middle of a room-clearing to roll initiative.
Why those IDF boys better phear my +3 Great Axe!
W0OT!
I'm not a nerd...I'm a level 12 paladin! :P
They aren't disputing skill, they are disputing a propensity or heightened susceptibility to influence and recruitment by other intelligence organizations.
