BATES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — An Upper Peninsula man cooking in his kitchen was shot after one of his cats knocked his 9mm handgun onto the floor, discharging the weapon, Michigan State Police said.

Joseph Stanton, 29, of Bates Township in Iron County, was shot in his lower torso around 6 p.m. Tuesday, the state police post in Iron River reported. He was transported to Iron County Community Hospital.

Michelle Sand, a spokeswoman at the Iron River hospital, said Stanton was treated there before being transferred to Marquette General Hospital for further treatment. But Marcie Miller, a representative of the Marquette facility, said there was no record of the hospital receiving a patient by that name.

A telephone message seeking comment was left Wednesday at Stanton's home.

State police said he was cooking at his stove when the cat knocked the loaded gun off the kitchen counter behind him.

I had a baby and our cat, together in the same household and my daughter never went near the litter box,let alone try to eat anything in it.

Cat and dog dander are the same. People can be just as allergic to a dog,as they can be to a cat.

You just don't like cats and are looking for any excuse to demean and insult them. And for every two reasons you can come up with for NOT having a cat,I can come up with 20,why one shouldn't own a dog!

Look, if you try to outlaw dogs, then only outlaws will have dogs.

Is that what you want? Eh?

You're telling ME to take a course in reading comprehension?

Eh? Eh?

Well, maybe YOU should take some courses on how to use the "space key" on your computer.

20 reasons not to own a dog - my foot!

My dogma could eat your karma for breakfast!

Sorry. Hope I'm not keeping you up.

Here, feel free to pass out on the couch here. I'll call your home and tell them you're too drunk to drive home tonight.

"you're a retread"

You come into my house, and steal my car. You drink all the liquor from my old fruit jar.

You can do anything that you want to do, but, uh-uh honey, stay offa them shoes.

I understand the owner who was shot had the cat castrated just 3 days prior to the shooting. I'd say it was justifiable.

Oh my goodness, that makes me want to get another baby. Unfortunately, I have a 100lb. lab who thinks my kitties should play with her. They do not agree. I don't think a little one is a good idea! Yours sure are cute!

Men have no idea how far they could get in this world if they would simply cross over to the kitty side.

My vets always take urine samples. I have two kitties who are prone to urinary tract infections. If your kitty is a boy and that is his problem, you need to get him to a vet right away. It can become critical for males since their urethra is so much smaller than a females. It can cause crystals in the urine, which a male cannot pass. If left untreated, it can cause a male to cease urinating. And obviously, that is bad.

worth the risk

What in the world are you talking about? I thought only liberal propaganda spewers spread kitty myths. And what kind of an idiot parent would keep a litter box out in the open? A person can have allergies to anything, and I have never heard of cat scratch fever except in a Nugent song.

So you just shut-up. Kitties are cute. And they purr. And they always smell good (if you keep them inside, which I do). And they don't eat crap. And they don't bark. And they don't knock my kids over or steal their toys, like my dog does. And you don't have to bathe them or give them heartworm medicine. And they are very lovey and quiet. And...

Here's a link to a site that carries at-home test kits. I didn't look to see if this is the one that tests the urine in the box by changing color. Otherwise, the vet has to get a sample from the bladder, not fun. Good luck!

Try this: http://www.animed.org/cats_home_health_kits
