(My son kilt that very deer with the savage 30-06 rifle he got for graduating HS.....)
I was 9 when my dad gave me my first deer rifle, it was an old 03-A1 springfield that had been sporterized. It had a Lyman peep sight the first year, then my dad put a fixed 6 Leopold on it the next year. It sits in my cabinet in the same condition it was then. Interestingly enough it wasn't until about 20 years ago I realized it was a R.F. Sedgley sporterized Springfield.

My left-leaning hubby loves to hunt.
We are newlyweds, and I am taking up game cooking. Here's my favorite way to prepare Venison steaks.
Coat them with flower, then press peppercorns into both sides of the meat. Cook them in olive oil turning once. Remove them to a warmer. Then add to the pan drippings 1/2 cup of cream and 1/4 cup of brandy and more peppercorns and salt. Cook on medium until the sauce thickens. Spoon over steaks and serve.

And all next year you can celebrate the 30-06's centennial birthday... Now I ask, what 100 year old artifact is as good now as it was 10 decades ago?
