I was told by an allergist that most people who develop an allergy to shellfish (shrimp, lobster, etc.) are actually allergic to cockroaches.

He said that sea crustacians are a close enough relative to the common house cockroach that our body tries to fight their ingestion as well. He added that allergic reactions to cockroaches usually develop after prolonged exposure.
