This is astounding to me because there are tables set up in front of a lot of stores here and it's not a problem. But I live in VA so that might explain it.

I think you stumbled on the issue. A table set up in front a store usually has the permission from the private property owner. A table on a public sidewalk is usually not allowed. That being said, ticketing kids who have a lemonade stand or selling cookies is just a waste of time and resources.

As an adult, you have the responsibility to teach your scout the rules and that includes following whatever laws are on the books

Maybe you want to be a goose stepping lapdog jack, but I ignore stupid laws that infringe on my rights.

Yes I hold many laws of our country in utter contempt. You can thank the liberals for that one.

Yeah, there are a few things left out of this story I would think based on my experience. The Captain was most likely driving by, as Cpts. do, and saw this guy. He most likely told his police officer driver to get out and investigate and see if the guy selling food on the sidewalk had a permit. He did not have a permit and the Captain ordered the officer to summonse the guy. Street vendors are a huge problem in the city. And Captains need numbers. This guy was just a number. Nothing else. If the Cpt. wasn't there, there would have been no ticket issued. But those guys are by the book. And if you want to sell cookies, go door to door you lazy sloth.

Teaching scouts anarchy and disregard for the law is not an option. As for being a "goose stepping lapdog jack" you can go pound sand yourself. You don't know "jack" about me, probably didn't read the rest of my posts regarding the subject either and yet you feel inclined to start the name calling.

Teach the scouts how to change the laws using civil discourse and they will be on the right side of things. Teach them to "....ignore stupid laws that infringe on my rights." as you so aptly put it, and they will eventually end up on the wrong side of things.

Are you sure it's only liberals to blame for the asinine laws in our country? How about lazy conservatives who won't get off their fat a** and let their voices be heard, maybe some conservatives are responsible for some of these laws as well. What an overreaching statement.

I will ALWAYS teach my son and other scouts to be responsible and to follow the rules, no matter how stupid it sounds. If not, then what do we tell them when we talk to them about citizenship, honesty, loyalty, etc.?

You obviously missed my point, so there is no sense in going any further with you.

Your example is exactly why my troop stopped selling popcorn. We had a "Troop" of 10 scouts, and couldn't compete with the mother of all troops in our area that had over 100 Boy Scouts, not counting the Webelos and Cubs. They probably had close to 200 all totaled selling in a town of about 8-10K. With that kind of spread it doesn't take long to saturate the market.

Thanks for putting it so clearly for others.

Cheers

Nobody ordered boxes and boxes of cookies in order to set up a stand on the street and HOPEFULLY get all their money back by selling them.

Well, it been quite a while since I was a Brownie Dad.

I used to take orders at work for my daughter and then deliver like you probably did. After a year or two of having people tell me, "I wish I knew. I want some," when I was delivering, I just ordered the boxes myself and then sold them when they came. I would just put out a "free samples" box each day until the cookies were gone. The good will was almost palpable, and we sold a lot more cookies this way.

I'm a long way from New York, but even I knew that.

You must allow the local bagmen to "dip their beaks".

Or maybe I watched The Godfather too many times.

Did anyone say this yet?
The Captain is setting himself up
with a "stress" ailment for three-quarters retirement pay. At his rank it's big bucks.
Just a thought...

I guess I'm trying to see the sense in ordering cookies at retail in order to (hopefully) sell them all at...retail.

"I wish I knew. I want some,"

Man, things have changed. There was no escaping the cookie-sellers in my day! My dad not only had to buy them from me, but from every one of his higher-ups who had a daughter in Scouts.

They're not against the girl scouts anymore. The girl scouts have become politically correct.
