The Roe Effect Goes Mad (Mad Magazine recognizes the Irony of Roe v Wade)

The Roe Effect Goes Mad

We know the Roe effect has arrived now that Mad magazine has recognized it. The humor mag's March issue has a comic strip (not available online; on page 24 of the magazine) that depicts a mother and daughter having the following dialogue (emphasis omitted):

Daughter: I'm going to a pro-choice rally.

Mother: Really? You know, when I found out I was pregnant with you I actually considered having an abortion.

Daughter: WHAT?

Mother: But I couldn't find a doctor, because back then abortion was outlawed.

Daughter: Why are you telling me this now?

Mother: Because if abortion was legal then, you wouldn't be around to go to the pro-choice rally today!

The girl in the Mad strip appears to be no more than 20, which means in real life she actually would have been aborted, since abortion has been legal everywhere in America for at least 32 years.

Imagine how big those pro-choice rallies would have been in the absence of Roe v. Wade.

I loved MAD magazine when I was growing up - and yes - I learned alot about politics through that magazine (and about movies). I just watched "Rocky" with my kids yesterday. I still laugh about the MAD magazine that I remember from 1976 with the strip about when Rocky gets up at 4:00 am to start training:

4:01 Get out of bed
4:02 Make 5 raw egg drink
4:03 Throw up on couch...

If someone can come up with a litmus test to determine if the fetus is going to be left-wing liberal, I might be willing to make an exception to my strong stand against abortion.

MAD was my favorite reading material as a child...

Even a few yrs ago, when I moved into my new house, the prior residents had a kid who subscribed to MAD...I never put that in the "return to sender" pile ;)

Maxine Waters actually said the same thing at the Pro-Choice Rally this year. She said she was going because her mother could not get an abortion. I don't think that the lunkhead realized what she was saying.

...of course, it follows that if abortion were legal, the daughter might not have to attend a "pro choice" rally, which is a good thing, because she wouldn't be there to do it...

OK, someone freakin' PM me and tell me if this is a good cartoon or a bad one!

Sometimes humour is more ironic than funny.

It's too bad more people don't know latin. Fetus is latin for offspring. The single change of words gives a whole different picture of "choice", "I'm going to abort my offspring".

What if the child was "determined" to be gay?

I doubt many feminists-in-training will see this bit of social humor/mockery, because, based on my growing-up-experience, it was boys - not girls - who read MAD magazine.

That's quite an ingenious bill, as it puts the lefties in quite a conundrum...

A mind is a terrible thing to lose.

Come to think of it, the fact that boys read MAD, but girls don't, is an early-age sign that male brains are wired differently from female brains. I know we're not supposed to acknowledge that truth, but there you have it.

Great, thanks.

For all the world to see...A typical FReeper heterosexist chauvanist heteronormative pig.

I even bet your dressed your baby daughter in pink...and your baby boy in blue!

What a disgrace.

Mine too. Do you remember the cover that had a hand giving the middle-finger salute? I guess I was about 12 or so when this came out and it confused me. It wasn't funny, and I couldn't see the point.

It is a good cartoon that represents the hypocrisy that is the Abortion Debate. To be "pro-choice" requires a lot of suspension of logic, which means the entire argument is swimming upstream against a flood of reality. A good example is how the democrats have aborted themselves into a minority status in this country. Another example is you won't find a pro-babykiller that has any tolerance for war deaths or the death penalty. You will not find the word "irony" in a liberal dictionary.
