BEIJING, China (CNN) -- China has unveiled a controversial new law that would allow Beijing to use military action against Taiwan if peaceful means fail to stop the island pursuing independence.

In a highly anticipated announcement, Beijing on Tuesday released details of the planned new anti-secession bill during its annual session of parliament.

A leading Communist party official said force would be a last resort if reunification efforts fail.

China has considered Taiwan a renegade province since communist forces drove nationalists from the mainland in 1949, and has repeatedly threatened to use military power against the island if it declares independence.

We are going to finally wake up the day the day after China annihilates our Pacific fleet. China is neither a democracy, nor a capitalist state, nor our friend. They are an enemy state bent on destroying US power and influence in Asia. While we are buying chinese toasters they are investing their money on technology, manufacturing capacity, and their military. Pearl Harbor II - the sequel, is in the making.

Perhaps, but China has been a long standing member of the nucear club too, and for all we know they may have one of theirs stored in a town near you. You could probably drag an entire nuclear ballistic submarine across our southern border without anyone noticing.

China will set a new mark in Military History when they become the first nation to fully fund their war machine through trade with their enemy who thinks China is their friend.

Hmm. Seems like the horse left the barn 50 years ago. Little late to talk 'bout keeping the door locked.

and how dependent are we on china for computer components? the decision of our business leaders to build factories in foreign countries may bite us in the ass (big time).

China has unveiled a controversial new law

Not passed or voted on in a democratic assembly, but simply "unveiled".

Who cares really? It will never happen. Besides WalMart has a great sale on dvd's this week. The 1.00 I save from having to buy it from a company that makes them in the US can buy me a dollar meal at McDonalds..

Yesterday there was a post that told of China's efforts to intimidate Australia out of keeping its treaty commitments to the US in case of war over Taiwan.

Chilling.

Not only that but when companies build over there they bring along propritory(sic) equipment such as computerized looms and machine tools that china gets for free and to copy. Companies in the US had to have R&D to build some of that high tech equipment.

Perhaps it is time for the Taiwanese nationalists to reinvade the mainland...

They may have a better shot at it, if they can rouse the people, than the Communists have at getting a couple dozen amphibious ships successfully across the Straights...

Absolutely right...it just seems weird that we may have to go to war against our most favored nation....how would that work...not bomb the stuff going to Walmart, but kill the guys that deliver it?

How many of those 'computer component' companies in China are owned and operated by Taiwanese? Most if not all. Taiwan had brought a lot of this on themselves.

And they are getting close to the day that they think they can win against our Navy. When that day comes, all hell is going to break loose in the Pacific.
