Richmond, Va. -- Surrounded by kindergarten classmates chanting "Nixon! Nixon!" on Election Day 1968, 4-year-old Adam Ebbin began shouting something else: "Humphrey! Humphrey!"

"I don't think I knew what it meant, but I knew I was different," Virginia's first openly gay lawmaker recalled with a chuckle.

I've never heard that...can't help you there. :)

My assumption was he was cheering for Nixon, too, and had something in his mouth.

I believe that is referred to as a "Lewinsky" these days. ;-)

Which reminds me of a ancient stories from my misspent youth. In the late 1950's, my brother and I went on a trip with my parents to San Francisco. While waiting near the trolley turn-around on market street we witnessed a violent, angry stabbing of one gay of another. My father told us that we had just witnessed a bizaar homosexual ritual and quickly moved us away from the area.

Scroll forward a few years. In 1967, I was a student at a Bay Area university. Some of my friends piled into a car one night and went downtown to a club in 'The City.' One of the biggest, toughest guys wanted to go into the a gay bar. He told all of us he was going to roll a gay and take all his money. We were waiting in the car laughing and drinking and having a good time.

A half hour later some of the guys became concerned. A few of my friends went this gay club and look for our friend. They found him beaten to a pulp in the rest room. He said that he had been attacked by a body builder type in the rest room. The a gay guy told him, "There are two things that I love. One is _________ and the other is beating the sh*t out of straights."

Gays are more violent and unpredictable than most people realize. Just because they have a public image as 'sissies' does not make that image a reality.

Moral: Danger often lurks in strange places.

"While Massachusetts and Vermont are entering the 21st century, Virginia is still struggling," Ebbin said."

Few things are as annoying as this type of self-righteous, holier-than-thou posturing. This guy should take note of the fact that' he's in Virginia, and that the majority mainstream values of that state reject legal recognition for same-sex unions, as will be proven when this finally gets on the ballot.

If he thinks so hightly of Massachusetts and Vermont, and is so embarassed by Virginia, then perhaps he should consider leaving the latter for one of the others.
