The left continues to set new standards for puniness. This haphazard grasping of straws is indicative of a group frustrated beyond words and unable to change their situation.
The Democratic National Committee said Sen Graham's remarks were innapropriate and they echoed comments made by former Senate majority leader Trent Lott (R MS) which resulted in Lott's removal as Senate leader.[snip]
Apparent reference.....Apparent to whom?? I am a Yankee who has spent a decade in the South. I know the people down there, and I know how they think. When he made a joking remark about Lincoln, it's all about him being in charge of the armies of the North that kicked the crap out of them in the "War Between the States"( as they refer to it). The were no racial overtones to his comments whatsoever, and they know it. The South was all but destroyed during the war, then came 20 years of carpetbaggers and very hard times. This happened only a handful of generations ago, many ancestral stories are still fresh in peoples minds. Of course the animosity is gone now, but to this day their cultural ego still smarts and they tend to joke about it as a matter of group therapy. The slave aspect was extracted years ago. They are embarrassed their ancestors kept slaves and for many years now the war has become all about states rights. That's the way it started, the slave issue became a subtext, albeit an extremely important one.
This vicious race baiting has got to stop. The left in their zeal to destroy Republicans is fomenting racial tensions and doing substantial harm to the cause they profess to promote.
The way I read it, he was saying the "Unreconstructed" southerners need to get over it. I agree with him and the democrats should also.
Any Souvrnr' whose still a Democrat is, of course "Unreconstructed"!
Not only that, but the Lefties need to decide, once and for all, what the Civil War really was all about. When it suits them, they like to say it was about economics and the northerners (and by extension Lincoln) really didn't fight the war over freeing the slaves. If that's true, then anytime anyone anywhere mentions Abe Lincoln, it has nothing whatsoever to do with slavery.
Let Graham stew in his juices a while. He's one of McCain's disciples.
Hmph. I must be tired.
If I have time to kill, maybe I'll read this again tomorrow and see if I can figure out who is supposed to have offended whom.
Looking at the Tennessee calendar, it is gratifying how many Tennessee counties hold Lincoln Day celebrations. Unlike South Carolina, Tennessee in general and East Tennessee in particular have been very appreciative of the great Lincoln as President Lincoln was in turn very devoted to liberating Unionist East Tennessee from the unwanted Confederate government.
Fill the rest of us in, OK?
Give Graham a break, he is just trying to fit in with all the other pompous ignoramuses of both parties which populate the Senate.
Just publish the list, by party, of those who voted against the Civil Rights acts of the 1960's. As a hint, one of those who voted against was Senator Albert Gore, Sr. of Tennessee.

Such a celebration would be a flop here in SC, for sure.

Your whole post was most excellently put.
