That's what they do to us in Canada, shove French down our throats.
When I was in grade 9 we were able to add Latin, which I loved, but I had a problem ....getting the two languages mixed up on tests. In grade 10 we were able to choose between French and Latin, and I wanted Latin. My parents however decided I would need French more, and now, I don't know either one.
You're right!!! Of all the voices in Gore's head, those two are, by far, the best known!!!! :>)
It needs to be read in it's entirety!
I agree. As I said in an earlier post, we had these ethnic heritage festivals when I was in grade school, back in the fifties. We thought it was fun to try other foods, hear other music, and try to learn dances. The teachers pointed out how many of these things are now part of what we think of as American. Perhaps today it's perceived as being forced on people, or that some people just don't want to learn about other traditions. If I have to give up stuffed cabbage, lasnaga, streudel, etc. we're in trouble.
English only and American history and a complete study of the Constitution should be taught. Multicultural studies should not be the criteria nor should the taxpayer be expected to carry that burden. Our public schools are rife with worthless classes that in the end do not prepare the student for a responsible life of putting food on the table.
"Maybe if we weren't on our little cultural crusade against all things different we could be a melting pot again rather than alienate ourselves into "multi-cultural" stratification."
Your education is lacking in historical truths.
The Irish who came to America were so expendable that in the digging of canals in the Washington, DC area they died like flies and about that significance. Blacks and slaves were not and could not be used because they had monetary value while the Irish had none; there were always more coming on the next boat.
The Polish were forever the workhorses of the coal mines that killed them and the butt of jokes which have been told with abandon up until Iraq.
The Chinese died "doing" the railroads without food.
One could go on and on about the varied groups who earned a place in our Nation by loving it and serving it.
These days they come across borders illegally, get medical aid and food and coddling and still only desire to set up their own culture here. There is no desire to better the Nation or to serve at all. The desire is to cripple it and cause it to be just like whatever they left.
Don't preach your "feel sorry" message about criminal entrants who don't even have to learn English for the greedy to hire them.
