Psycho peril for teen pot users
The Sunday Mail (AU) ^ | 06MAR05 | Jessica Lawrence

Shocking research reveals teenagers who smoke cannabis are twice as likely to develop psychosis.

The ABC's Four Corners TV program tomorrow night airs research that shows the human brain does not fully develop until the early 20s, placing pot-smoking teenagers at risk of suffering significant and permanent damage.

The New Zealand research destroys the myth that cannabis is a soft drug and experts say today's hydroponic marijuana is being "morphed" into a different substance from that smoked by the hippie generation.

Psychiatrist Dr Andrew Campbell said the widespread use among young people – one in five teenagers uses cannabis – was a "tsunami waiting to happen".

"This is going to get worse before it gets better . . . We've already got an epidemic in incidents of psychosis. Cannabis makes teenagers think they are king of the world and in control . . . but if they don't stop using it they're in big trouble," Dr Campbell said.

He is calling for schizophrenia to be called "drug-induced psychosis", and estimates about 80 per cent of his patients have used cannabis.

"Often when users stop smoking is when they start experiencing psychosis," he said.

Questions I have about potheads and internet posters in general: Why do all potheads think that the government is concocting lies about the harmfulness of marijuana? To what end? Researchers and scientist and physicians are involved in this conspiracy? Why? Secondly, why is it that when anybody on an internet message board mentions their I.Q. it is always 160 or above? What's up with that? Does the number 160 have the same magical quality as 12 seems to have for another organ of the male anatomy?

Cannabis is cheap, too, making it more easily available to today’s teenagers than it was for their parents’ generation.

HUHHHH!!!

I grow for myself. The product I grow would be 10 to 20 times the price I used to pay 10 or 20 years ago. Yeh, I know that's the argument of some. "It's so strong now", It's not my mom/dad's weed anymore", "Its 50 bagillion times more potent than before". Hell yeh!!!!!!!! I don't smoke as much then, DUH!! Less smoking = good. I never sell. Thats where the penalties come in.

This whole article is nonsense.

Just leave people alone. I've been married 20 years, employed well all of them, and two happy healthy kids who don't know, just like they don't know what their mother and I do in the bedroom.

teenagers who smoke cannabis are twice as likely to develop psychosis.

Horsesh!t!!!

The people making this statement are twice as like to get federal funding.

I've been very open about my growth and use. The only arguments I ever get are that my children will be tarnished. It's never explained how their not knowing makes this possible. A cognitive argument is never made or even attempted. I find it odd that the same people making this statement are the same ones nailing their secretary at lunch or the babysitter.

I don't want to be a part of your life, please stay the F*&k out of mine. Your pablum puking, simplistic, one size fits all sense of freedom makes me sick. GO F(*K yourselves you moralistic , sanctimonious, wannabe pu$$ies.

I don't pay Social Security, so you can have any monies I paid. Keep it, its on me. I pay the Medicare portion and that's OK too. Keep it I don't want it, its all yours. I want nor shall I accept a nickel from Uncle "Do as I say" Sam. Leave me the f**k alone.

I am continually amazed on this website with the antifreedom mentality of some. It's always the same' "I had a brother, sister, uncle, nephew, Saimese Twin that ruined his/her life because of "Insert drug name here," which was brought on by the demon weed. It was never his/her/their fault, only the demon weed. How do I get to live in this life where only bad things happen to bad people. Holy crap!! Don't I deserve something bad for having lived my life my own way.

"Who will be the first to accuse me of being a Libertarian and hense forth a supporter of child molestation, at least in their minds"?

How 'bout it RP.? Which one of your family members was beaten down to "Worthless Druggie" status by the evil weed?

Come on Rp, your one of the biggest two faced jerkoffs that ever set keyboard on this site. "I'm about freedom", I'm about Justice," "I'm about the American way", unless of course you smoke a thimble full of weed every other day. Then my uncles, cousins, third nephew twice removed screwed his life up doing what you do. Therefore you must stop. All others involved must be put in jail.

The founding Fathers would never stand for someone doing something non-criminal in private. Go F**k yourself RP.

Well, its obvious: The government hires the police. The police arrest all the potheads and their friends, and are therefore evil. EVIL I tell you. And any research by evil people is conspiracy work. Fortunately for the people who think like this, tin-foil hats are cheap.
Researchers and scientists and physicians are involved too, because they work for the government of course! Slaves to the Man. This sort of thing should be obvious to anybody on this board, since we all have IQ's of 160+. Especially if we smoke dope.

/My IQ varies between 80 and 200, depending on which version of the IQ test I take. Those things are totally useless. But then again, another part of my anatomy varies between 4 and 12, depending on when you measure... And I believe it is very useful. Does a great deal of my thinking for me.

//Oh, and I would smoke dope, except the stuff reeks. You growers, stop worrying about making it stronger. Make it taste/smell good! Get rid of the burning rope smell!

GATEWAY????

MYTH #13:
MARIJUANA IS A "GATEWAY" TO THE USE OF OTHER DRUGS

Advocates of marijuana prohibition claim that even if marijuana itself causes minimal harm, it is a dangerous substance because it leads to the use of "harder drugs" such as heroin, LSD, and cocaine.

THE FACTS

Most users of heroin, LSD and cocaine have used marijuana. However, most marijuana users never use another illegal drug.

Over time, there has been no consistent relationship between the use patterns of various drugs. 83

As marijuana use increased in the 1960s and 1970s, heroin use declined. And, when marijuana use declined in the 1980s, heroin use remained fairly stable.
For the past 20 years, as marijuana use-rates fluctuated, the use of LSD hardly changed at all.

Cocaine use increased in the early 1980s as marijuana use was declining. During the late 1980s, both marijuana and cocaine declined. During the last few years, cocaine use has continued to decline as marijuana use has increased slightly.

In 1994, less than 16% of high school seniors who had ever tried marijuana had ever tried cocaine - the lowest percentage ever recorded. In fact, as shown below, the proportion of marijuana users trying cocaine has declined steadily since 1986, when a high of more than 33% was recorded.

Proportion of Marijuana Users Ever Trying Cocaine

High School Seniors, 1975-1994 84

1975: 19% 1980: 27% 1985: 31% 1990: 22%
1976: 19% 1981: 28% 1986: 33% 1991: 22%
1977: 20% 1982: 27% 1987: 30% 1992: 18%
1978: 22% 1983: 28% 1988: 26% 1993: 17%
1979: 25% 1984: 29% 1989: 23% 1994: 16%

In short, there is no inevitable relationship between the use of marijuana and other drugs. This fact is supported by data from other countries. In the Netherlands, for example, although marijuana prevalence among young people increased during the past decade, cocaine use decreased - and remains considerably lower than in the United States. Whereas approximately 16% of youthful marijuana users in the U.S. have tried cocaine, the comparable figure for Dutch youth is 1.8 percent. 85 Indeed, the Dutch policy of allowing marijuana to be purchased openly in government-regulated "coffee shops" was designed specifically to separate young marijuana users from illegal markets where heroin and cocaine are sold. 86

He represents the potheads well. I wonder if these middle-aged adolescents still have their poneytails and tie-dyed shirts.

Hi.

I'm a well known supermodel whose I.Q. is too high to be measured.

I developed the Mars Terraformer that will instantly transform that barren planet into the Garden of Eden.

I also fly through the air and save small puppies from being crushed by cars!

BTW, did I also mention that I smoke pot (tee-hee)!

Australian Broadcasting Corporation FOUR CORNERS Interview - Dr Andrew Campbell
Q. Is it your view that the cannabis in fact could be inducing the psychosis?
R. Yes. I think it’s – clinically I can’t prove it because ... you can’t dissemble all the different factors. But my impression is that a lot of people out there who’ve developed a psychosis who wouldn’t have otherwise developed psychosis, and that’s down to smoking daily cannabis in their teenage years.

That's a whole lot of proof the Doc's got going there...

Keeps so many others employed in fixing them.
And there you have it, boys and girls. Proof of what I've said before...
To have mental health you must first have mental illness.
(even if the illness has to be fabricated)
What "an industry" the mental health field is! New products almost daily.
