I'm curious as to the home environment. This is just such an odd story, I can't help but imagine that there must be some very weird external influences in this child's environment (especially regarding the parents - I suspect there's quite the little freak show going on with these two).
Since this is Massachusetts, the parents could be a man and a woman, two women, or two men.
If either of the latter two choices, then the conclusion is obvious.
