Robert Casey Jr. Says He'll Run Against Santorum by KYW's Tony Romeo

Robert Casey Jr., being wooed by national Democrats to challenge incumbent Republican senator Rick Santorum for his US Senate seat from Pennsylvania, has decided to jump into the race.

Earlier this week, Governor Rendell was asked about the prospects for a fight over the Democratic nomination for US Senate:

“I hope, in all cases, if we can avoid a Democratic primary, that would be a good result. But until anybody declares their intentions, it’s impossible. I’m not going to pick up the phone and talk to other candidates until I hear that someone definitely wants to run.”

After the governor made those remarks on Wednesday, former Pennsylvania treasurer (and former Republican) Barbara Hafer told the Associated Press she would run.

Then on Friday, when current treasurer Robert Casey Jr. also said he would run, Rendell did pick up the phone. Hafer has released a statement saying she’ll honor the governor’s wishes and stay out of the race.

"for an unknown he came awful close to winning the primary"

Was it really that close?
I know it was closer than many expected given that Pat was so unknown.
But, he was a long, long shot and many of us couldn't take a chance on loosing the seat.
Time to make up.

and voting for specter being chairman promoted conservatism how?

A hell of a lot more then a far leftie like Joe Hoeffel does

I fully admit Spector is not a true conservative and he can at times be a real pain in the butt

But he'll be with us far more then Lefty Joe

Barbara Hafer declared yesterday...then withdrew today. Casey has it sown up. Rick's in trouble.

How is Santorum an idiot? Because he didn't back the candidate who ran against Specter?

Pennsylvania has not been a "swing state" for several presidential elections. People like to call it that, but the Dems take it every time.

I could be wrong I'm trying to check.
I know it was closer than lots of people thought it would be.
But, Pat was an unknown in the state. He ran a good campaign to get a close as he did.
His credentials as a conservative were unproven.
After his defeat he campaigned for President Bush.
It seems he's back on the team.
He can run against Rick if he chooses or he can help him beat the commie.

"Santorum might have to actually move back to Pennsylvania to fight for his seat."

That's very clever. As we all know, Santorum is the only US Senator to have a residence that is a de facto primary residence in DC or Virginia. This "residency" thing is bogus. If Rick, who visits every county in PA at least once a year, spent a lot of time in his Pennsylvania residence, you what people like you would say? Why isn't he in DC, working for his constituents.
