Hector David Herrera Martinez sticks by this story: Someone left on his doorstep the $283,473 that Kimble County sheriff's deputies found in the car he was driving.
But authorities believe Herrera, 40, had illicit intentions in mind - traveling to Mexico without reporting the cash that deputies near Junction seized following a traffic stop on Feb. 17.
A federal grand jury in San Antonio indicted Herrera this week on a charge of smuggling bulk currency, and he's expected to make his first federal court appearance in San Antonio in the coming week.
Herrera, who lists an address in Bartlesville, Okla., is listed in a Kimble County report as an undocumented immigrant and is being held at the Kimble County Jail on an immigration detainer, and for suspicion of money laundering, a state charge.
The accusations were leveled against him after Deputy Billy Hull found more than $280,000 in a safe in the trunk of a 1987 Lincoln Town Car that Herrera was driving. Herrera was pulled over for allegedly changing lanes improperly, a police report said.
Upon searching the vehicle further, Hull found $3,478 under two of the seats in the car.
In a signed statement, Herrera said someone left the cash on his doorstep.

Curious..... Kimble County is NW of San Antonio in the Junciton Tx area.... The article gives very few specifics but I wonder were this guy was going..... Was he traveling on I-10 or some other road in a southerly directions towards Mexico...
Wouldn't call him a racist, but I have called him an idiot on numerous occasions. He has received Rush's Katie Couric Award for asking the stupidest questions.
Let me know your opinion, after watching him tonight.
What a lucky guy. Maybe GW will name him Secretary of the Treasury.
Couldn't find anything about it in the Junction Eagle.
"Herrera was pulled over for allegedly changing lanes improperly, a police report said."
County deputy stopping him, makes me think not on I-10.
See? We all thought those emails from Nigeria were a scam. Boy, were we wrong.
There is a "pro" Mexican immigrant tilt to him. But he is very good on the MS-13 and the threat of the OTM's. His point was the Mexicans are sent back over the border (at least?)but the OTM's are turned loose with a promise to come to court.
If I had a nickel for every time someone left $283,473 on my doorstep ...
<< Please let me know if you want on or off this South Texas/Mexico ping list. >>
Put me on your list, please?

Yep. I find $200 grand on my doorstep all the time...
...what a maroon.
