And you forgot to mention that Democrat Jim Maloney actually was pro-life, so the pro-abortion Dems decided that they would rather win than sabotage the campaign of a socially conservative Democrat.

I didn't think Jim Maloney was actually pro-life, just less pro-abort than some others. If you are right, I am embarrassed, although I lived in the third that year (and ran for state rep from Wallingford/Cheshire), I was astounded by the State Sen. candidate from Waterbury (some businessman who's name I forget, maybe Shrumm?) would not disclose his position on abortion until he was asked point-blank in a debate that I was part of in Cheshire. The faux Irish-Catholic Dem from Wallingford gave a sheepish pro-abort answer, and the pubbie literally said "Yeah, what he said."

I married, moved to the 2nd in '97, and finally out of state in 1998. Illinois is bad but not as hostile to adoption and home schooling as Connecticut is. (Actually, CT is not bad for home schooling, but IL is excellent on that issue, just really bad on guns. The social mindset in CT is deteriorating and I am afraid it is in a tailspin. I will not raise children there).

I just went through Maloney's votes as scrutinized by National Right to Life, and you are correct; Maloney claimed to be pro-life, but he didn't deliver when it counted. While he voted consistently in favor of the ban on Partial Birth Abortion, he only did so after voting in favor of sham substitute amendments offered by pro-abortion Representatives that would have allowed an exception for the "health" of the mother (including "mental health") that would have made the ban toothless. Maloney also voted consistently against the Mexico City Policy (which prohibits federal funding of foreign organizations that carry out abortions), in favor of Greenwood's "clone-and-kill" bill that would only ban cloning of embryos that would be implanted in the womb, and in favor of funding abortions in military hospitals. Other than on final passage of the PBA ban, the only pro-life votes by Maloney that I could find were against using federally controlled medicines for assisted suicide and against funding abortions in prison facilities.
