SACRAMENTO (AP) - By a wide margin, Californians oppose granting driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, according to a poll released Friday.
A Field Poll showed that 62 percent of state residents oppose granting the licenses, while 35 percent favor the idea. The poll also found that 49 percent support issuing a different kind of license to illegal immigrants, with 48 percent opposed.
The survey found a large ethnic divide on the question. Three out of four white, non-Hispanics said they are opposed to issuing regular driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, while Hispanics favor the idea by a two-to-one margin. Of all other races, 77 percent are opposed.
Almost nine out of 10 Republicans - 86 percent- reject the idea. Fifty-six percent of Democrats also are opposed.
A bill introduced in Congress would prevent California and other states from issuing any driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. Overall, 59 percent of Californians said they supported that prohibition.
Former Gov. Gray Davis initially opposed providing licenses to illegal immigrants but reversed course during the 2003 recall election and signed legislation granting the privilege.
One of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's first moves after taking office was to convince the Legislature to repeal the law. As a compromise, Schwarzenegger indicated he might support licenses for illegal immigrants as long as the cards carried a distinguishing mark.
The governor vetoed a license bill last year saying it didn't provide adequate security provisions. State Sen. Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, reintroduced the bill this year.
The poll surveyed 506 adults living in California between Feb. 8 and Feb. 17. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points.

It would be the same result on a national level. Most Americans are fed up with the human tsunami.
Well, duh!!!
Lets take that same poll in Texas and I guarantee that it will be higher!!!
fyi
Pitty Arnold didn't lend his support and name to the signature drive to put this issue on the ballot! We fell short by a huge 170,000 or so signatures. No, he decided to lend his name to his ineffectual "reforms" which will amount to butkis.
Heck, It's dribbling up here too. ;-)
There was no need to put it on the ballot -- Arnold already made the Legislature reverse itself, when he became governor.
