SACRAMENTO - The day after Arnold Schwarzenegger launched an initiative drive to remake public pensions, a prominent ally of President George Bush attacked the plan and pleaded with the GOP governor to pursue an alternative.
Forcing new public employees to move to a 401(k)-style pension system -- in which they would invest their own money and assume the risk of playing the stock market -- would hurt the University of California's ability to attract top talent, said Gerald Parsky, chairman of UC's Board of Regents.
The proposal is one of three ``reforms'' that Schwarzenegger said Tuesday he wants to take to the ballot this year. But Parsky, who led Bush's 2000 and 2004 campaign efforts in this state, said the measure would undercut the UC system's recruiting efforts and, in turn, the economy.
``California's economic competitiveness will suffer if we cannot retain the nation's best and brightest faculty,'' Parsky said. ``In today's global economy, California's intellectual capital is our state's chief competitive advantage.''
Parsky called on lawmakers to negotiate a compromise, something Schwarzenegger has been loathe to do so far this year. Instead, California's celebrity governor on Tuesday blamed legislators for failing to act and staged a Hollywood-style event, driving off from the Capitol in a Humvee with a ``Reform 1'' sign pasted to the grill.

I've been supporting the UC system for the last 6 years (between 2 kids) and the tuition has done nothing but skyrocket! I say get rid of some of the administrators to cut costs, cut some of the required credits for "diversity", allowing students to graduate in 4 or less yrs, and we can all save a little $$!
Parsky = POISON
Hopefully conservatives will stay out of this hypocritical battle between these two species of neocons.
The phrase "playing the stock market" is a very poor choice of words from this reporter. Most reporters know as little as most Americans about investing -- that's a shame, because the public could benefit from some good, unbiased information.

Gerald Parsky should STFU.
Yeah. Nice job, Parsky. Bush and Schwarzenneger really owe you.
Parsky ping
The 401(k) idea is one of the few things Arnold has proposed that I like. Meaning he won't do it!
Parsky also opposed the recall drive of Gov. Davis that would lead to a Gov. Schwarzenegger.
Why the heck should we? Anymore we've go everything to win and nothing more to lose!!!
I think it's an ideal time to strike while they re-expose their mutual weaknesses and how utterly useless they both are to CA's secure future!!!
That's what the heck I think!!!
I just wish I had the energy and resources to back up what I'm thinking right now because the iron is getting hotter and hotter for the striking!!!
BTTT!!!!!!
I agree with you here and at least I know a thing or too about investments anyway being a Broker.....I haven't worked with any Calpers or 403B type retirement plans for a long time, not my area, but there are many very terrible annuity type mutual funds in 403B's and Calpers that are shit.......any fund run by insurance companies is not nearly as competitive as a true mutual fund plus you can easily invest in bond or moderate to conservative allocation funds if you are risk adverse......I don't know about the costs but investment vehicles in 401k's usually alot better investment vehicles than some of the crap in educational/institutional type retirement structures
Have you guys seen this off the yahoo news about Parsky this am???
Washington, (PRWEB) March 6, 2005 -- California Republicans have generally escaped the Potomac Two-step since President Ronald Reagan left behind this shining city and returned to his Golden State. The District of Columbia is a city known for the cowboy sway, fiery rhetoric and endless negotiations. Yet, after US Senator Ted Kennedy's memorable speech delivered against Reagan Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork from the well of the United States Senate partisanship eventually gave way to civility.
On Thursday, March 3rd several email missives were widely distributed from Coast to Coast by Shawn Steel, a Southern California trial lawyer. Best known as a Republican donor, Steel gained status as a large dollar contributor to the Bush Cheney 2004, Inc. campaign. Steel and his wife Michelle, a candidate for the 3rd District of the California State Board of Equalization, were so active that they earned Pioneer status.
The emails directly attacked another prominent Republican, Gerry Parsky, the California Campaign Chairman for Bush Cheney 2004, Inc. But the attacks also focused on the Chairmans former senior advisor for political affairs, Dora Kingsley. Dr. Kingsley, an active Republican for more than 20 years, also teaches Federalism at the graduate level as an Adjunct Professor for the USC School of Policy, Planning & Development in Sacramento. The attacks even referenced Pacific Regional Chairman of Bush Cheney 2004, Inc., Mario Rodriguez.
The venomous language and vulgarity in these emails, defiles all standards of decency. I fail to see how sexist and racist remarks reflect President Bushs message of social and personal responsibility. We are all Republicans. said Elizabeth Blackney, from Washington, DC, where she attended meetings with Dr. Kingsley and republican leaders from across the country. I am absolutely certain that Governor Schwarzenegger would not approve of Steels language and insinuations. Dr. Kingsley has fully endorsed the Governor for re-election is hopeful his efforts for reform are successful.
