No national reaction to nose-blowing

Norway's national soccer coach Åge Hareide has no intention of dropping controversial striker John Carew, who is now the focus of an investigation in Turkey, accused of blowing his nose on an opposing player.

Carew has admitted to blowing, but not aiming. He has also claimed that photographs of the incident are manipulated, and display an unnatural amount of material being expelled toward an opponent, 19-year-old Turk Aytar Ac.

Crew, currently at top Turkish club Besiktas, faces punitive action from the football federation there, where the incident has become a full-blown scandal.

For the time being Norwegian football officials intend to let their Turkish counterparts deal with the mess.

Carew has been involved in unpleasant incidents before, the most notorious being an assault of teammate John Arne Riise on the Norwegian team's bus in September 2003.

Carew knocked Riise unconscious and his refusal to apologize or discuss the incident led to a rift between him and Nils Johan Semb, national coach at the time, as well as between Carew and some of the other players.

Hareide has managed to patch things up and Carew has been a positive force under the new coach's guidance.

"As soon as something happens with John they are out to get him in Turkey. I think he should be left in peace. I will use him in any case, as long as he is in good form," Hareide told Aftenposten.

You know, I have no dog in this fight--I like Turks, too--but this is strongly reminescent of when Nebraska, the Norway of America, was feared by everybody else, most especially those from a rectangular state to the southwest of here.

Alas, those days when one feared Nebraska are gone; we have gone to join the old men of Old Europe--while Norway--as long as it rejects the advances of the old men of Old Europe--is the future, Nebraska is the past, just like those old men in Old Europe.

"Ping" for the Norway ping list from Nebraska, the Old Europe of America.

This is a little early today, because I have to go out and walk the cats across the vast prairies, taking advantage of the sunny weather.

Joke used to be that Nebraska and Colorado would merge - Coloraska". Nebraska would finally have mountains and Colorado would finally have a football team.

I never heard that one, sir, although I've heard quite a few Colorado jokes in the past.

The new "coach" here got into considerable trouble last football season, when he used the "R" word in describing the upcoming game, Nebraska-Colorado.

I mean to say he got into A LOT of trouble.

Nebraska-Missouri is a rivalry (the third-oldest in the country); Nebraska-Kansas is a rivalry (the sixth-oldest in the country); Nebraska-Oklahoma used to be a rivalry, perhaps the greatest one in the history of college football.

But the record must show the annual Nebraska-Colorado game was NEVER a rivalry, no matter how much Colorado and the national news media wished it to be.

I think this new "coach" is learning to be a little careful in his language now; Robert Devaney, Tom Osborne, and Frank Solich never made this sort of gaffe--but of course they understood Nebraska, whereas this new "coach" understands.....California.

Just because television calls some thing something, doesn't mean it is something.
