America Online's Netscape team has opened its doors to the public, releasing the first beta of the revived Netscape Web browser. Based upon Firefox, Netscape version 8 focuses on security and user privacy, and supports rendering with both Mozilla's Gecko and Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser engines.
As reported by BetaNews, AOL originally planned for a February beta, but pushed back the release to March citing the need for more time. The company has been polishing the numerous changes and enhancements that were added since the prototype of Netscape 8 last November.

Does this thing come packaged with a bunch of junk I don't need? In other words, is it like any other Netscape package from the past few years?

I've always preferred Netscape over Internet Explorer.
That's why I'm currently using Mozilla.
However, there is absolutely no way I'll go near anything associated with AOL.
Nope. No way. Ain't gonna do it.

I'm not going anywhere near an AOL product. It will probably take over my computer to force me to use AOL.

Verily, AOL sucketh.

From the article, "Users can create their own toolbars with RSS feeds, or use the included toolbars that feature content from AOL's media properties."
That, alone, will ensure it does not get very popular. AOL is a dying entity....this seems like a last bit gamble to get on life support.

Does this thing come packaged with a bunch of junk I don't need? I'd be shocked if it didn't.
They brag about their pop up killer and then put pop ups of their own in the package that don't get killed.

Not only will it force you to use AOL it will:
- Change your political affiliation.
- Change your sexual orientation.
- Cause male-pattern baldness (regardless of gender).
- Make you right bad checks.

The last couple times I looked at Netscape, the installation process must have put a half dozen icons on my desktop, none of which I needed or wanted. For reasons unknown to me, the software was not stable on my machine either.
I don't understand AOL's philosophy that people want all kinds of extras in their software. In my experience, this practice tends to cause more problems than it's worth.
