Since the US death rate is close to 9/1000 per year, our population of US troops in Iraq being around 140,000, one could argue that we are saving soldiers lives by having them in Iraq for the past several years.

Installing a democracy was always one of the many goals of the Iraq war. What if there was no war? Think about the future. I don't just mean 5 years from now, I mean 100 years from now. After Saddam, there would have been Uday or Qusai, and after that one of his grandchildren. The people of Iraq would continue to have been oppressed, and they would continue to blame the United States for their problems due to continued UN sanctions. Meanwhile, they would have continued shooting at US planes enforcing the no-fly zone on a daily basis. After many years of UN inspectors getting the runaround, they would eventually have given up and Saddam would have started up his nuclear weapons research again. Perhaps 20 years from now, Uday (the mentally unbalanced serial killer) would have had his hands on nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of Iraq's would have been tortured to death for speaking out against (or for being suspected of speaking out against) the government. Yes, when you think long-term, it was worth it.
