I was rather suprised at the comment, her lack of a source, and that she took a complete pass at rephrasing it. What's up with this comment by her? Racial insensitivity? What would Juan Williams have said if he were present?

If brains were dynamite, between Juan and Mara, you couldn't blow the wings off a fly with their combined payload.

But I think she is correct (or about so of the numbers) and of Hillary's not so blind motives of whom she really is courting. Perhaps ill phrased. But no reason to jump on her.

Mara's about as sharp as a sack of doorknobs.

She always gets a look on her face like even she doesn't believe what she's saying.

Mara is my favorite liberal. I give her lots of credit for speaking her mind, even when it goes aginst the party line. I do not know, but if the number of Blacks incarcerated is 70% of the criminal population, she should be able to make the assertion that based on demographics, approximately 89% of them will be voting straight Dems. If she called it as it is, is that really racially insensitive or just some folks being just a little too mushy.

They just replayed the program and Mara said 85% to 90% of felons are black.

Well clearly the felon vote, whatever its racial composition, would go heavily for the Dems. Therefore the GOP would be crazy to pass a law that forces states to give back the right to vote to felons.

Leave it to the states, otherwise Hillary can count on a significant boost in 4 yrs.

Mara strikes me as your typical 'Suburban Lib', never having to live with or face the reality of her philosophies. Bet her views would change if she or her family had to endure what many less sheltered deal with every day. In other words, she's a typical Lib.

It is no wonder that racial minorities are most severely affected, since they represent an astonishing majority of those Americans sentenced to jail or prison. More than two-thirds-68 percent-of the nation's incarcerated are people of color.

Research by University of Minnesota sociologist Christopher Uggen suggests that convicted felons could provide a boost to the Democratic ticket. While turnout among former prisoners tends to run at just 25% to 30%, more than 70% prefer Democrats.

Something tells me Orenthal James Simpson, Kobe Bryant, Bill Cosby and Michael Jackson will all consider casting their ballots for Hillary. Oh, wait a minute, none of them is a felon (officially, I mean).

Note: this topic is from March 5, 2005. Thanks DTogo.
Mara Liasson makes the unsubstantiated statement (she cites no source) that those politicians (Hillary) are going after black voters because 70% of felons are black. Brit made several attempts to gently coax her into rephrasing that, which she doesn't and continues talking.
This shouldn't come as a surprise -- NPR doesn't think of this as anything but "stating fact". Oh, and Obama wasn't yet POTUS. And... See, just helping out NPR on a pretext to fire Mara Liasson.
