I have always dismissed the notion of VP Cheney stepping aside in '06 or '07 to give a boost to someone for the nomination as just bunk. But I'm starting to come around on that.

Ditto that. Some would squeel that Bush was anointing his successor, but, frankly, I'd trust Bush and Rove with the lives of my family, so I'd trust them to pick a successor (particularly if one or two likely candidates do not emerge by the end of this year). I think it would be exciting to have Condi move to head of the class.

Personally, I don't see what would be wrong about that, especially if were to be Condi. She and the President obviously see eye-to-eye on foreign poiicy. What we don't know about her is her views on domestic policy. Like Rudy, I suspect she might be "too liberal" for some. However, if the Middle East does take a dramatic turn for the better in the next three years, Condi would almost be a shoo-in despite the usual "real" conservative clamor.
