BRICK TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- Brick Township school officials might ban cell phones after a student's phone cam videotaped a teacher's outburst.
Students said the teacher began yelling when students failed to show respect to the national anthem.
The tape was posted on several independent Web sites.
It shows Stuart Mantel telling his high school class to stand and keep quiet while "The Star Spangled Banner" is played. The teacher screamed at a student who whistled and told students to stop whispering.
Mantel approached a student who remained seated during the anthem and told him to stand. When the boy told the teacher he didn't have to, the teacher
The suspense is killing me. ;O)
typical liberal reaction to being caught in the act of abuse: they're considering banning cellcams.
how about disciplining the teacher?
How about disciplining the students?
God bless our publik skewels.
great. lets paint patriots as child abusing whack jobs.
How about kicking the kid out of school for not standing, the little disrespectful sh*&%$t!
the teacher was right.....stand up for the Nationl Anthem.
when I was in school and you didn't stand the nuns would beat the crap outta you and then your father would come to the school and beat the living crap outta you....
Ditto, to me the tape should be grounds for some students being suspended. Does not insubordination not count in High School?
"The teacher screamed at a student who whistled and told students to stop whispering."
I don't see how the teacher was at fault at all. The kid should have been yelled at. Too bad the idiot kid acting disrespectful was not the one shown on the video.
Unless the rest of the article goes on the say that the teacher punched the kid or something similar, it doesn't sound like the teacher was "caught in the act of abuse." It sounds like the teacher had had enough of disrespectful, spoiled, ungrateful, disobedient brats. And it sounds like he had every reason to feel that way.
....of course if the teacher had been yelling about "tolerance" for perverts this wouldn't be a story.
Where do I send a few bucks for the teacher's defense fund?
Students have the right to free speech. The Supreme Court decided that forcing a student to say anything, show respect for his country, stand during the national anthem, is unconstitutional. Partly because if the teacher was a communist, the student would have the right not to swear allegiance to that creed, either.
Sounds like they pushed him too far. Everyone has a limit, and it's unfortunate that students are enabled to push as much as they like. They have all the latitude and the teacher hasn't a leg to stand on when it comes to setting some basic standards of behavior. Unless he did physical harm to one of the students, I can't say I blame him.
I'm with the teacher on this one. The lack of respect students have is unbelievable. Don't parents bother to teach respect for anyone or anything any longer?
Good for the teacher! Give him a medal.
Too bad the teacher lost it, poor guy'll probably lose his job because of these brats.
I wonder how many illegal aliens were in the class.
I agree that the kids seem out of control, but screaming at them isn't the way to control the classroom. The teacher has a problem controlling his classroom, and his yelling only makes matters worse.
the school's action is to shoot the messenger.
yes, we should stand for the National Anthem, pulling a chair out from under a student isn't the way to instill respect.
