I don't think Pence has the political muscle. A conservative member of the House that's not in any major leadership position will not get it done.

I still think Owens would be the best - although he may not run.

Mike Pence is the Chairman of the RSC(by unanim ous vote)
He has turned The RSC into the most powerful(and largest) committee in Washington.Leadership cannot do anything without Mike Pence on board. As far as muscle,I would take 75 highly dedicated house conservatives(which he will get)who are usually ignored, over the entire lazy senate anyday. The people will decide our next President not beltway insiders. Please do some research on the RSC.You will be pleasantly shocked on the power Pence has.I would take the RSC chair over Ways and Means any day.

Ten to Watch As New Congress Revs Up (AP)

By ALAN FRAM, Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON - The new Congress is brimming with veterans ascending to glittery positions of power and glitzy newcomers demanding the spotlight for themselves.

Following is a look at 10 rising stars to watch — some obvious, some obscure — as the 109th Congress navigates the shoals of war, budget deficits and President Bush's hopes of revamping Social Security:

_Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind.: Pence, 45, will head the Republican Study Committee, the spearhead group for the GOP's most conservative members. That's a highly visible post where he will work with — and sometimes clash with — his party's leadership. Pence's opposition to spending has led him to vote against a major education increase in 2001 and the 2003 creation of Medicare prescription drug benefits. A lawyer and former radio talk show host, he seldom avoids television exposure, leading some to think he has grander political plans.
