LIMA, Peru (AP) - A Peruvian judge said Tuesday that she issued arrest warrants for former President Alberto Fujimori's three siblings on allegations they embezzled millions of dollars from a Japanese charity.
Anticorruption Judge Antonia Saquicuray told The Associated Press that she issued the international arrest warrants for Juana, Rosa and Pedro Fujimori on charges they stole more than $21 million of private Japanese donations to Peru during their brother's 1990-2000 presidency.
The two women are in Japan, and Pedro Fujimori is in the United States, said the former president's spokesman in Lima, Carlos Raffo. Saquicuray said Peru will seek the trio's extradition if they are apprehended abroad.
Raffo denounced the order as politically motivated and denied any funds were mishandled. He said the donations went to the construction of 80 schools in rural areas of Peru and that the work was supervised by donor representatives.
Fujimori, who also was charged in October with syphoning funds from Japanese charities, has been living in self-imposed exile in Tokyo since his government collapsed in November 2000 amid a corruption scandal.
An investigation last year estimated that Fujimori mishandled $282 million of public money during his decade-long rule.
Fujimori has denied wrongdoing.
Peru has tried to extradite Fujimori from Japan to face corruption charges and alleged human rights abuses, but Tokyo has so far declined to hand him over, citing his legal protection from extradition by Japanese citizenship that was extended to him through his parents.
If he has faith in the judicial system in Peru, he should return and clear his and others names.
