Yeah, they should just let him do whatever he wants, I mean, ignoring police when they address you is a sign of mental stability.

What would have been the best solution is for the Store Manager to have to deal with a lunatic lurking around the kids all by himself. That way I could find out if he'd go the knife route, or the gun route. That's a great thing for the kids, I think.

Calm down there buddy. Beating the crap out of a father of two for taking some extra lettuce is a sign of mental stability? I respect the work and effort of our law enforcement officers, though in this case they're well over the line.

I have to disagree with you here.  When the gendarmes ask you time and again to step outside to get things straightend out, and you just stare them down, there's an indicator that things are going to escalate, and possibly fast.
Ideally, no one wants to see some guy get zapped in front of the kids, but in my eyes, the zappee is 100% at fault when he fails to comply to a very reasonable request(s).

I'm sure that the few cents that the salad bar might have cost the resturant was a lot less than the bad publicity this whole incident has/will cause...
