Brother of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades leader planned series of deadly attacks in Israel.
TEL AVIV - The Shin Bet and the IDF apprehended an Islamic Jihad member on December 30th, 2004, for allegedly planning a series of deadly attacks in Israel, a senior source revealed Tuesday.
Jibril Zbeide, 19, is a senior member of the Islamic Jihad and the brother of Zakariya Zbeide, the leader of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades in Jenin.
Zebeide, the younger brother, had been on Israel’s wanted list for a prolonged period until being apprehended. An M-16 rifle and magazines were found in his car upon his arrest.
According to the Shin Bet, during his investigation Zbeide admitted to being a member of the cell which had planned a rocket attack on the town of Afula, in a bid to create a “balance of terror" similar to that which prevails in the Gaza Strip.
Zbeide had planned to station launching pads in the Afula area from where rockets would have been fired into the city. However, the attack wasn’t carried out due to a technological failure.
The organization is also suspected of planning a car bomb attack against IDF troops near the seam line , as well as planning a double shooting attack at a school in the French Hill neighborhood in the northern part of Jerusalem.
The attack was intended to cause as many casualties as possible among the school children.
Fortunately, the two terrorists who had planned the attack in Jerusalem were caught and the attacks foiled.
