The United States wants to develop the capability to destroy Iran's nuclear facilities with air strikes.
Officials said that the need for US capabilty to destroy underground nuclear facilites has spurred the renewal of the effort to create the so-called 'super bunker busters.'
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, issued the request for the weapon, termed the Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator, in a letter sent to then Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham in January.

LOL!
Hehehehehe...
Does anyone know why we can't repeatedly bomb the site with conventional weapons?
Nutcracker.
No!

I think the site is too far down in the ground for that.
Thanks!
That is an interesting observation.
Actually, the most likely reason this weapon became a requirement are Yamantau and Kosin'sky Mountains in Russia, which are crucial command-and-control nodes for Russia's strategic nuclear forces.

He must be vewy vewy ronery.
Using Nukes to take out their nukes?
Tactically maybe, but as strategy? I think this will backfire and create greater desire for non-nuke countries to aquire large arsenals.
It happens all the time here and in the MSM.
1. Contrary to Communist propaganda from the Cold War, a neutron bomb would've completely destroyed Fallujah. (The area we were fighting in was actually rather small.)
2. Using any nuclear device would create what are known as "secondary activation products." The residents would have to wait two decades to return, not two weeks.
"...lactate..."??? Oh, sorry, it's lamentate (my amblyopsia must be kickin in again...)
I think that we have bunker busting nukes that can already do this job, but I understand why we might want a conventional missle that can do the same thing.
I'm wondering why we can't just use multiple conventional bunker busters, with one hitting every 90 seconds till you get deep enough. With GPS guidance, we should be able to pretty much put 'em in, one after the other. Sort of like taking bites out of steak until your done with it, rather than trying to wolf it down all at once.
Hopefully those with a lot more smarts than I with regards to this scenario can let me know if this would work or not.
Best Regards
Sergio
