Support the Sensenbrenner Drivers License Bill to Help Combat Illegal Immigration

House Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner (R-WI) has introduced the REAL ID act on the floor of the House. The REAL ID act contains four main provisions:

-- An applicant for a driver’s license must prove lawful presence in the United States. States may still issue the license if such proof is not produced but must stamp it in such a way as to show permission to legally be in the United States was not presented. Such a stamped license cannot be used for any federal purpose such as boarding a commercial flight.

-- Asylum laws are tightened so that terrorists may not enter the country and move around freely as an asylum applicant.

-- A 3.5 mile stretch of fence near San Diego that has been stopped by environmentalists is completed.

-- The present law that doesn’t allow an alien already in the United States to be deported because of affiliation with terrorist groups is changed.

We the undersigned believe the REAL ID act is a step on the road to controlling illegal immigration in the United States by controlling the identification of our citizens. We petition all members of the United States House of Representatives, The United States Senate, and President George W. Bush to enact this bill into law forthwith.

- yes, good point.

"Hispanic" only refers to those in Latin and South America who speak Spanish. Bolivians, Paraguayans, even Argentines, and inhabitants of Uruguay are all considered "Hispanic".
But Brazilians are not "Hispanic", as they speak Portuguese.
I believe Carib-beaners are not considered "Hispanic", but Cubans are...Many South American folks are of native Indian ancestry, Portuguese, etc. But let's *LABEL* them all "Hispanic"

But I quite frankly am tired of hearing conservatives using this *liberal* label. My adopted son is of Puerto Rican ancestry. Some would try to label him "Hispanic".
But he is not, as he doesn't speak Spanish, and he never lived there, just as most so called "African-Americans" never lived in Africa.

I think it is a waste of time quibbling over what "race" means. Simply put, racism is a philosophy based in the idea that humans can be categorized into simple groups, which make them superior or inferior in some way or another. I don't really care for that classification method personally. It implies that all whites are alike, all blacks, etc etc, when genetically, there is probably more in common between Moroccans (black) and Spanish(white), than between Moroccans and Zulus which are both classified "black". A person from Eastern Russia probably has more in common genetically with a Chinese than with a Frenchie. I, who am classified as white have a LOT more in common with native north American Indians than one from the rain forest of Brazil does. Ethnicity is a legitimate way of breaking people up possibly, but that has as much more to do with the difference in culture than genetics.

All that being said, the issue regarding illegal immigrants is not truly a racial issue. It is a Nationalistic issue. The majority of Canadians are considered "white" but I would have the exact same problem with this if it were Canadians streaming across the border causing problems. It is nationalistic to place the good of your nation ahead of other nations, not racist.

BTW, If I call a Canadian a Canuck.. is that racist?

- I think it's somewhat demeaning of some of the OBL folks to conclude that all folks South of the border want to do is come here and do menial labor in the U.S. That is a superiority complex if there ever was one.

They have no problem charging racism when someone points out that quite a few who come here from South America have criminal intent, but no problem assigning "Hispanics" to "washing dishes and collecting garbage".
