When did that change? The church allowed an annulment in my marriage, against my will, and we didn't have a civil divorce. This was in the late 70s, early 80s.

Are you sure? I worked in a marriage tribunal from 1985-1996, and we never took a case that had not first obtained a civil divorce. It's a Church regulation, meant to prevent alienation-of-affection lawsuits.
