Why would they assassinate Abbas? Who do you think is behind all of this? Arafat made peace noises too and kept on orchestrating terrorism.

I don't know if I buy that. Abbas's position is tied to the peace process. If it falls apart, he's through as the PA leader and his life's in danger too.

It's important to note that this particular atrocity, like the Netanya bombing and others, was aimed directly at the Israelis most likely to support the peace process. It didn't directly hurt the IDF, the government, the settlers, or the national-religious faction. It hurt the most secular and socially liberal people in the nation.

Hamas used to do this sort of thing all the time, because they had nothing to gain and everything to lose if the peace process went forward. Now the Syrians, who are in the same position, are doing it. A real peace process would cement the alliance between Israel and Jordan, threatening Syria's position in Lebanon and its influence in the region.
