LONDON, England (CNN) -- Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas said he believes peace with Israel is possible -- but that an end to violence is a "mutual commitment" -- ahead of a conference designed to build support for the new Palestinian leadership.
Abbas' comments were published Monday in Britain's Independent newspaper after a suicide bombing outside a Tel Aviv beachfront nightclub Friday killed five people and injured at least 65.
"We have an opportunity and it would be irresponsible if we, the Israelis, or the world allow it to slip away," Abbas was quoted as saying in the interview, which was conducted by e-mail.
