AMSTERDAM Paul Hiltemann had already noticed a darkening mood in the Netherlands. He runs an agency for people wanting to emigrate and his client list had surged.
But he was still taken aback in November when a Dutch filmmaker was fatally shot and his throat slit on an Amsterdam street.
In the weeks that followed, Hiltemann was inundated by e-mail messages and telephone calls.
"There was a big panic," he said, "a flood of people saying they wanted to leave the country."
In 1999, nearly 30,000 native Dutch moved elsewhere, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics. For 2004, the provisional figure is close to 40,000.
"It's definitely been picking up in the past five years," said Cor Kooijmans, a demographer at the bureau.
Ruud Konings, an accountant, has just sold his comfortable home in the small town of Hilvarenbeek. In March, after a year's worth of paperwork, the family will leave for Australia. The couple said the main reason was their fear for the welfare and security of their two teenage children.
"When I grew up, this place was spontaneous and free, but my kids cannot safely cycle home at night," said Konings, 49. "My son just had his fifth bicycle stolen."
At school, his children and their friends feel uneasy, he added. "They're afraid of being roughed up by the gangs of foreign kids."
Sandy Sangen has applied to move to Norway with her husband and two school-age children. They want to buy a farm in what she calls "a safer, more peaceful place."
More than 40 percent of immigrants receive some form of government assistance, a source of resentment among native Dutch.
"What is new," he said, "is that Dutch people who are rich or at least very comfortable are now wanting to leave the country."

The Dutch seem to be cowards, don't they? Why don't they take back their country?
"I vant to go to Amerika vhere eet is safe. A place like.... how you say? Phee-la-del-fia? The city ov brutherly love? Yes, eet is vhat I dream of....
Whats a bit unnerving is that the Dutch republic has a very proud history of fighting brutally for independance and existance now people just ducking and leaving.
P.S. (aculeus how would u feel if i come to ur thread and tell people to stop posting there and come to mine instead? your not being civil)
'Camp of the Saints', anyone? Anyone????
One thinks of suggesting the Dutch move here, but who would want a people who legalize drugs, love the welfare state and national health insurance, and are irreligious.
If the early Christians were so negative, we would already be taken over by the Muslim horde.
If you have traveled extensively to the low counties, such as Holland, you must have noticed the filth, drugs, rampant sex, and acceptance of all this by the people. It is the basic fault of the Dutch population that they did not attempt to maintain their culture against decadence and concurrently welcomed these Islamic scumbags to take over their hiomeland.
Actually, although I always search before posting, on some occasions I have inadvertently posted a duplicate. When that was called to my attention I asked the Admin Moderator to kill my posting.
In this case the prior posting is not mine. I discovered it was already posted by searching yesterday and then deciding not to post a duplicate, something well-mannered Freepers do all the time.
Perhaps because its another day your truncated posting (NYTimes does not require excerpting) ought not be terminated.
I'll let the AM decide.
For the same reason Americans don't: We're outnumbered by dependents.
How many times do we have to reread this story?
Heck, if it's good enough for California it's good enough for Holland.
Please don't change titles.
I guess they're just going to let the Islamists win, then.
this isn't about who posted first or last its about each person being able to have his own thread and opinion... It doesn't matter who did what first or second what matters is that you respect the thread of that poster instead of degenerate into OH I ALREADY Posted that Kill this thread everyone can come to mine. (notice how it feels)
Reading comprehension is apparently not one of your skills. Let's try it one more time.
