Saudis Videotaped Terror Suspect Abu Ali's Confession and Offered to Send Him Home to U.S.

# NEW YORK, Feb. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The confession of Ahmed Omar Abu Ali -- the young Muslim-American who told his Saudi questioners that he had met with a notorious al Qaeda operative and talked about an assassination plot against President George W. Bush -- was recorded on a videotape that was immediately turned over to the FBI, Newsweek reports in its March 7 issue (on newsstands Monday, February 28). The tape became the chief piece of evidence against Abu Ali, whose confession occurred two years ago in a Saudi Arabian prison, where no U.S. officials were present and where suspects are often physically abused. But back in Washington, the case presented an agonizing dilemma for top Justice Department officials, reports Investigative Correspondent Michael Isikoff.

Although federal agents became convinced that Abu Ali was indeed "a really bad guy," as one put it, top aides to then Attorney General John Ashcroft didn't think they had anything resembling a solid criminal case. If the Saudis sent Abu Ali home to the U.S. -- as they kept offering to do-Justice officials fretted the videotape would likely get tossed out of court, and the suspect would walk. "We didn't know what to do with this guy," one former Justice official confided to Newsweek.

Under U.S. law, police brutality-or any hint of coerced confession-is often ground for dismissal. U.S. prosecutors insist that Abu Ali was examined by doctors and there were no signs of abuse. But a source close to the Saudi security forces told Newsweek that the interrogations had indeed been aggressive. "He definitely got slapped around," the source said. "But he was not tortured."

To date, every last one of our Northern Virginia junior jihadi Wahabbis has plea bargained for substantial and serious jailtime.

Not one - zero - has yet to seriously fight the federal felony charges against them, including the Paintball Jihadis.

If he does fight the charges, Abu Ali of the Dar al Hijra mosque in Falls Church would be the first of his many (convicted and jailed) brethern to do so.

I predict a plea.
