Your "flat earth" bogeyman is a fiction. Most knew the world wasn't flat -- especially those who had some reason to think about it one way or the other -- like sailors.
The heliocentric solar system was deduced by devout Christians. Copernicus was a Catholic cleric. Galileo was quite devout and remained devout despite his infamous persecution by the Church.
