Public radio turns off the music
THE WASHINGTON TIMES ^ | February 26, 2005 | Chris Baker

Chopin is on the chopping block.

Public radio stations in Washington and other cities are dropping classical music from their lineups, replacing it with news and talk shows, especially the increasingly popular offerings from National Public Radio.

In the past five years, between 40 and 50 stations that once featured a mix of classical music and news either dropped it or sharply reduced the amount they play, according to Station Resource Group, a Takoma Park consulting group that helps public broadcasters conduct strategic planning.

The latest station to join the crowd: WETA-FM (90.9) in the Washington area, which will pull classical music off its schedule and switch to an all-news format Monday.

I literally can't listen to NPR.  It's not so much that I find the content objectionable, it's the pace and inflection with which they deliver it......It's the aural equivalent of softly banging your head against the wall for 20 or 30 minutes.

The smarmy, condescending, sing-songy patter-blather....it drives me crazy.

WETA also has faced a juggernaut in WGMS-FM (103.5), a commercial classical station owned by Bonneville International Corp.

~sigh

All the time wasted on playing quality music reduces the available time to spend spreading their disinformation, and propagandizing the non-thinking, left leaning, pseudo-elite.

Actually, my bet is that the NPR stuff isn't more popular. It's probably less. But the drooling lefties contribute more money than the dentist's office that plays public broadcasting classical music.

I can't stand NPR, but I've loved having my choice of three (three!) classical music stations in DC. And WETA-FM had one jewel I've been listening to almost every Saturday night for 15 years: Traditions, a showcase for bluegrass, folk and ethnic music, humor, and historic recordings. I'll miss it. What else shall I listen to on Saturday nights? sigh. . .

DC now has two OVERLAPING NPR stations broadcasting much the same thing.

That's because there are actually two public radio services.
