Straight line down the boulevard, or on a gently rolling interstate it was sweet. But driven a little hard on narrower country roads it was scary. We're awfully spoiled by the chassis and tires of today, even on mass market sedans.
I had to seriously back off for fear of what I might do to this $50,000 machine. My 350Z is not as pretty, and yeah I can't do much maintenance myself, but point to point on the roads I like to drive it would be at least 30% faster.

They also ran forever, the outer body panels rusting away and ruining their appearance long before the mechanicals were shot. In my hometown, the local ne-er do wells used to pick them up used and then drive them into the ground, because they seemed to put up with bad treatment and little maintenance. Some of them would say there was no sense putting money into a car when there was dope to be bought, but they still wanted something that would move.
The new stuff really is amazing, but when I see the prices and the complexity of anything considered "hot" today, I shrug my shoulders and console myself with memories.
(My "learning" car was my dad's '70 Charger with a 383 Magnum/four-speed.)

Yeah, those 318s were about indestructible engines. My best friend in high school (late 80s) had a 73 Satellite with a 318. He never changed the oil once, he totally abused it and it thrived!
His sister wrapped it around a power pole one night in Cracktown.
I've gone through this whole thread and there's not one picture of a scantily clad lady leaning on a car. Don't any of you know what car pictures are supposed to be about?

I'm not dissing anything, I think the Corvette is a great car and the best value for the dollar in the performance sports car class. And the racing class Vette's are fast and competitive. I also believe that a car should have the engine in the front and the rear wheels should drive.
But the fact is that in the racing world where money is no object Formula 1, Cart and Indy cars the proven best combination is mid-engine. If that weren't true then those cars would have a different configuration.
So while Corvette's are great and certainly not threatened by the Saleen and McLaren etc. The fact is that at a pure performance level the advantages of mid-engine design has been proven.
In '71 I owned a Triumph GT6+ and a friend had a 69 Vet. There was a stretch of road about 7 miles long we traveled constantly, it was very narrow and curvy. I had a standing bet with him that I'd give him a case of beer if he could even stay within sight of the GT6+ on that road. He never collected.

I just got an RX-8, and it is one of the slickest handling pocket rockets I've ever driven. Jazzy little 2-lobe rotary that kicks out something like 240 horse into a 6-speed gearbox. Not exactly the L88 tire-shredders of the 60's, but a great, kicky little car.
Rush never would say the make of his wheels, but after researching what's out there based on his little hints of features about the car at different times, my considered opinion is that his Mamma Jamma ride may be the one of the two Maybach models. There are two models of these, one is a bit longer and more expensive, as I recall.
Of course, at 58...I only drive it to church on Sundays. heh-heh....
The 2005 M5 will cost about $100K in the States when it is released here. It boasts 500 HP.

My 03 Cobra already does 0-60 in 4.3 seconds. The new Z06 will have 500hp and cost $75k and the new Cobra will have 465hp and cost $38k.
