I don't know if this has already been posted at FR, (a search of "Best Wishes for the Holy Father" brought no results)but I thought that well-wishers might appreciate an opportunity to send a kind word during a difficult time. Here is the address in case the above link doesn't work:

Thank you everyone for your interest and all of your kind and gracious replies, the great photos and the personal stories.  I apologize for my less-than-timely response, but I've been fighting the flu for the past few days and haven't spent much time at the computer.  I wouldn't want all of my FReeper friends to catch anything  :-)  I'm feeling better now, so it's time to cause trouble on the internet once again.

I have no doubt that the billions of prayers, emails and kind thoughts from FReepers and well-wishers all over the world have assisted in ensuring a solid recovery and a good outlook for the Holy Father's health.  Here is an update released today from the Holy See Press Office:

Holy See Press Office Director Joaquin Navarro-Valls today issued the following statement to journalists on the Pope's health:

The Holy Father's post-operative phase is taking place without complications.

His general condition and biological parameters continue to be good.

The Holy Father is eating regularly, spends some hours in an armchair and has begun exercises to rehabilitate breathing and phonation.

The next communique will be on Thursday, March 3.

Vatican says Pope is recovering well

CTV.ca News Staff

The Vatican offered an upbeat assessment of Pope John Paul II's health on Monday, saying he is eating regularly, and is beginning exercises to improve breathing and speaking.

The statement from the Holy see said the 84-year-old Pope was also spending some time sitting in an armchair, which was evident on Sunday when he made a surprise appearance at the hospital window.

"The Holy Father's post-operative phase is taking place without complications. His general condition and biological parameters continue to be good," the Vatican said in a statement.

"The Holy Father is eating regularly, spends some hours in an armchair and has begun exercises to rehabilitate breathing and phonation."

The statement did not say how long the Pope would remain in Gemelli Polyclinic hospital.

The pontiff was admitted to hospital last Thursday, and underwent surgery to insert a tube in his throat to help with breathing. It was his second hospital stay in less than a month.

Despite his ill health, the Pope appeared at a window on his hospital ward on Sunday. He couldn't speak, but he looked alert. He made the sign of the cross, and pointed to his throat where the tube is.

"He's got an extraordinary strong will, and he just bounces back," Father Gerald O'Collins told CTV's Canada AM on Monday, speaking from Rome.

"It's incredible that at age of 84, a couple days after an operation, he was able to make that appearance, as he did Sunday morning."

It was the first Sunday in his 26 years as pope that the pontiff did not deliver his weekly blessing. He didn't even miss it when he was shot in 1981, and was recovering from an operation in 1992.

But his appearance was enough to get the crowd chanting "JP Two, We love you!"

Just moments before his appearance, in St. Peter's Square, the Vatican undersecretary of state, Archbishop Leonardo Sandri, delivered a substitute blessing from John Paul.

"I thank you with affection and feel you all spiritually near. I think of you gathered in St. Peter's Square, alone and in groups that have come, and to all those from every part of the world who are interested in me. I ask you to continue to accompany me, above all with your prayers."

The Pope, who has Parkinson's disease and suffers from crippling knee and hip ailments, was rushed to hospital earlier this month for breathing problems, stemming from the flu.

He appeared to rebound from the illness after his release on Feb. 10. But some sort of breathing crisis prompted his readmittance before noon on Thursday.

Some have questioned whether his relapse happened because he left hospital too soon.

The next Vatican update on the Pope will be delivered on March 3.

Great news. I've been out of the "loop" all day. Thanks for the ping.

Update:

VIS-Press releases

TWO CARDINALS VISIT THE HOLY FATHER

VATICAN CITY, MAR 2, 2005 (VIS) - Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, met yesterday with the Holy Father for a brief work session in his room at Gemelli Hospital and, upon leaving, spoke with journalists, telling them that the Pope "spoke to me in German and Italian. He was very alert and will work on the material that I brought him. I am very happy to see the Holy Father fully present mentally and capable of saying a few essential things in his words."

The cardinal told the media that he had brought "greetings from the Congregation for Divine Worship which is currently meeting in plenary session. I also brought greetings from many others and even some work from our congregation."

In remarks made to the German language program of Vatican Radio, Cardinal Ratzinger spoke of the Holy Father's suffering:

"The example of a Pope who suffers is very important as we have seen in recent years: suffering is a special way of preaching. From the many letters I have received and also from direct personal witnesses, I have seen many suffering people who now feel accepted. The Association for Parkinson's Patients has written to me, thanking the Pope because he helps the ill to strengthen their image, so to speak, because the Holy Father has the courage to appear in public as a person who suffers and who continues to work. Through his suffering John Paul II has communicated many things to us: that suffering is a phase on the path of life, and that he participates in the passion of Jesus Christ, showing us how fruitful suffering can be when we share it with the Lord and live it together with all those who suffer in the world. In this way, suffering takes on a great value and can be something positive. When we look at the Pope's life, we see that this is an important message, especially in a world that tends to hide or even erase pain."

Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Connor, archbishop of Westminster, England, visited the Holy Father this morning. The cardinal told journalists that "in health or in sickness, in great strength or in weakness, the Pope is offering a witness of faith to the Lord and to his extraordinary mission in today's world."
****************************************************** (end of press release) Question to all: This is the first that I've heard of the Pope speaking since his operation. Is this true? If so, it's cause for great joy!
