Why Men Earn More

Why Men Earn More: The Startling Truth Behind the Pay Gap And What Women Can Do About It is Warren Farrell’s latest book, and a fascinating read.

It has stirred vigorous and predictable debate about what causes the "wage gap" (search) by which the average female employee is said to earn approximately 80 cents for every dollar paid to a man.

But what I view as Farrell’s most controversial point remains undiscussed. Namely, should women use affirmative action (search)--that is, government-mandated preferences-- to ‘correct’ the free market’s wage gap and make more money? Farrell, who is usually associated with male empowerment, says "yes."

He provides detailed advice on how to do so, for example through tax-funded tuition and other programs unavailable to men.

The first part of the book revolves around refuting feminism’s explanation of the wage gap: namely that it results from rampant discrimination against women in the workplace.

Many arguments surrounding the wage gap are not addressed, however.

For example, women’s lack of access to various well-paying blue collar jobs due to union policies and attitudes. But addressing such arguments is not the book’s purpose. Refuting the specific feminist claim of discrimination is. And Farrell ably accomplishes this goal on two levels.

So, they want to use affirmative action to make up the wage gap? How does that work? Are they somehow oppressed because overall women tend not to stay in their chosen career field as long as men? Neat trick, that: claiming that they need affirmative action assistance for a situation entirely of their own causing. By the same token, I demand CEO pay immediately, even though I haven't worked long enough, nor do I have the business experience, to be one. Nevertheless, my pay is substantially below that of the average large-corporation CEO and I demand that the government remedy the situation immediately.

I know many, many women who make a LOT more than I do - and I've got a very good-paying job.

This "glass-ceiling" business and discrimination toward women in the workplace is way overrated. Women have been and are doing great in the marketplace of jobs in America; they will do even better in future.

The 80% statistic is nonsense. It includes women who have opted out of the full-time career path for motherhood, and skews the statistics. It's like saying that teenagers earn, on average, 10% that of adults.

When comparing apples to apples (FT, career-path workers), the average woman earns (IIRC) 96%-97% that of the average man.

80 cents on a dollar? I thought it was 70 cents on a dollar. What happened, did the ladies get a 14% increase? That's gotta be good news for wimmen.

Hey look. I don't know of any company in the world that would pay a dollar for work that somebody else does for 80 cents, unless there's some sort of qualititive difference in what they get for their money. If businesses could hire competent female employees at 20% less than male employees and be assured of equal or better results, nobody would employ men.

Yep. Some even in spite of their lack of qualifications, skills, or performance. That's what happens when job offerings and advancement are based on political-correctness instead of merit.
