Man accepts ride from sheriff's deputy, goes to jail for drugs

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

YELM, Wash. -- An offer of a ride from a Thurston County sheriff's deputy wound up being a trip to jail for a man who apparently forgot what he had in his pocket, deputies said.

A deputy saw Jamie D. Dawley, 25, of Onalaska, walking near Washington 507 near Yelm Tuesday afternoon, asked where he was going and offered him a ride to his destination near the Pierce County line if he would submit to a pat-down search, sheriff's Capt. Bradley J. Watkins said.

Dawley accepted and began emptying his pants pockets. Out came plastic bags containing what the deputy believed were methamphetamine and a glass pipe.

"He tried to hide it once he figured out what he had just pulled out," Watkins said. "Of course, the brain wasn't engaged."

Asked what was in the bags, Dawley replied, "drugs," Watkins said.

He was booked for investigation of drug possession and released pending further action.

"If it wasn't for the dumb ones, we wouldn't catch as many as we do," sheriff's Lt. Joseph Vukich said.

I don't know about you, but I'm always happy to see another meth freak off the streets.

"He was booked for investigation of drug possession and released pending further action."

Doesn't sound like he's off the streets.

Reminds me of an episode on Cops. Officer pulls young man over for running a stop sign, the whole time the officer is questioning the man, the camera operator is zooming in and out on the joint he has stuck over the top of his ear.

Meth is a vile drug. That being said, if you must submit to a search to get the free ride, there may be a 4th amendment issue.

Since the perp agreed to it, I guess it's a moot point, but...

I'll second that.

ROTFL! D'oh! This is a local story for me... This is my home county sherrif's dept.

This does sortof remind me of a story that happened to a friend of mine (Lisa). Her car had broken down on the side of the freeway, and she was walking. A state trooper stopped to give her a ride, and either asked her, or she divulged that she was carrying a concealed weapon, one of those little dinky derringer-type pocket guns.

She held her arms up and he took it from her pocket, just for safekeeping... He asked if it was loaded, she said yes... He tried and fumbled with it for a minute trying to figure out how to open it up. Being an unfamiliar gun, and knowing my friend, a pretty unusual imported and cheap gun, he couldn't figure it out. She tried to help him, and at first he resisted, telling her not to come closer... but when he really couldn't figure it out, he asked her to explain, which is hard to do without pointing, and he finally ended up just handing it to her to unload. They put it in the trunk, she thought he was really embarrassed and quiet on the ride, and when he dropped her off at a service station, he took it out of the trunk and gave it to her.

Coincidentally, she didn't have her CWP on her, and in his distraction and embarrassment, he never asked for it. ;~D

"If it wasn't for the dumb ones, we wouldn't catch as many as we do,"

If it wasn't for the dumb ones you wouldn't catch hardly any of them.

Of course, on one hand, drugs tend to make you a little out of it so I guess it's a moot point unless you sell and don't partake.
