MADRID, February 25 (AFP) - A suspected Islamic extremist believed linked to groups that planned attacks on targets in Madrid was found dead in his prison cell in the northern Spanish city of Zaragossa after apparently hanging himself, prison sources said.

They said Mustafa Zanibar, whose nationality was not revealed, was found by prison staff after apparently hanging himself with his belt. Last October top Spanish judge Baltasar Garzon ordered the arrest of about 30 people suspected of belonging to a radical Islamic group that planned to attack several buildings in the Spanish capital, including the main courthouse and Real Madrid`s Santiago Bernabeu football stadium.

BBC version:

Madrid suspect found dead in jail

A suspected Islamic militant accused of belonging to a group that planned attacks in Madrid has been found dead in prison. Mustapha Zanibar, a Moroccan national, was found hanging from a belt in his cell's shower room by officers at the prison in Zaragoza, northern Spain.

While in prison he invited inmates to celebrate last year's train bombings in Madrid in which 191 people died.

He is said to have converted to radical Islam while serving a murder sentence.

Last November, prominent Spanish judge Baltasar Garzon accused of him belonging to a cell planning attacks on Madrid landmarks - including the National Court, a football stadium and two railway stations.

Nearly 40 people were accused of belonging to the cell, some of them already in prison.

Zanibar was jailed in 1996 for killing a man by setting him on fire.

He had recently been placed in isolation in Zaragoza's Zuera prison because he had become a danger to others, according to Spanish media.

It was while he was in another prison, that Zanibar invited fellow prisoners for a coffee to celebrate the 11 March 2004 Madrid train bombings, according to his prison dossier.

So being a danger, he was allowed to keep his belt? Trivial, but was what stood out to me in the story.

Hajj belt is used to carry personal belongings such as money and passports, while at the same time, can be used to hold up the ihram garment. Comes with snap pockets. If the wearer experiences sweating from the intense Saudi heat, these belts protect documents inside, such as passports and travel papers, from becoming wet. Huh?

Nanclares de Oca is the prison were Mustafa Zanibar was originally serving a 29 year sentence for burning alive another muslim who had invited him for supper at his house of El Ejido (Almeria)(it makes you wonder how bad the food was!!) This little darling, Mustafa, invited the other prisoners in A Lama jail to coffee, to celebrate the slaughter of March 11. (jails must be really friendly in Spain, if inmates can throw "parties"). Now he's hunged himself and the only thing I'm sorry about is that his belt was fake leather... I wish he had been forced to use a belt made from some pig product!!!

Each cell a terrorist is placed in should have a noose hanging from the ceiling , just in case they wish to end it all.
