A battalion of American Rangers headed for duty in Afghanistan, is taking 16 Stryker armored vehicles with them. Normally, the Strykers are only used in mechanized infantry brigades. But since the rangers will be moving around a lot in Afghanistan, and not always by helicopter or on foot, it was thought that the Strykers would be a useful vehicle for that kind of work. The Strykers are equipped with satellite communications equipment and remote control (from inside the vehicle) gun turrets. The regular infantry who have been using Strykers in Iraq have been very satisfied with the vehicles.
Normally, the rangers are light infantry, and are trained to use helicopters or parachutes to arrive at the combat zone. In previous trips to Afghanistan, the rangers have used hummers to get around on the ground.

Now if I could just remember where the A-3 was at, I am sure I drove it.

Yeah, ow. Now, it really hurt when I passed the 20-yr anniversiry of my ENLISTMENT date in the army.
What's going to suck, is when I pass the 20-year anniversery of my ETS.
How will I explain that to the 21-yo girls, now?

I'd prefer we send in Ted Striker.

I passed the 10 year anniversary of of my retirement 3 years ago.
That is what hurts, knowing I am out to pasture and can't even get into black water, so I keep sending a little money to where I think it will do some good for the troops.
Mainly the wounded warrior project.

I guess the old days of Mech infantry being looked on as lazy are over.
My uncles all walked from Normandy to Berlin. They used to call the mech people lazy but I think it was pure jealousy.

At my favorite watering hole yesterday the subject somehow came up. I counted back and was shocked to realize that I have been retired for over 18 ½ years!
How time flies when you are
having fun getting older.

At least the Strykers will give patrolling Rangers something to stow their rucks in!

If it wasn't for that damned bird-cage the thing wouldn't roll as much. They get so top-heavy with all that extra armour, you'll if you run over anything larger than a dog.
