NBC Show Blasphemes Communion Host

An episode of the NBC sitcom "Committed,” featuring two characters who flush a Communion wafer down a toilet, has created a firestorm of protest among Catholics.

During the February 22 broadcast, two non-Catholics are mistakenly given Holy Communion at a Catholic funeral Mass. As recounted by the Catholic League:

"Nate, who is Jewish, and Bowie, a Protestant, don’t know what to do with the Eucharist, so they make several failed attempts to get rid of it. For example, they try slipping it into the pocket of a priest, dropping it on a tray of cheese and crackers, etc.

"At one point, the priest, who is portrayed as not knowing the difference between the Host and a cracker, goes to grab the 'cracker' from a tray of appetizers; he initially balks when he discovers that it is the last one. Then he changes his mind, saying, "Oh, what the hell.”

"By far the most offensive scene occurs when Nate and Bowie accidentally flush what they think is the Host down the toilet."

Catholic League President William Donahue is demanding that NBC apologize.

"To say that Catholics are angry about this show would be an understatement - the outrage is visceral and intense," he said Thursday.

"NBC has made a direct frontal assault on Roman Catholicism, choosing to mock, trivialize and ridicule the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ," Donahue added. "More than an apology is needed. This episode should be retired for good, and that is what we will demand.”

"It's up to you to provide documentation that says otherwise..if in fact you have ever read the Bible."

You're still be insulting. I suspect with deliberation. I gave you an extremely well documented and annotated artcile via a link that includes Gospel citations and a variety of other tools to help you understand what the Church has taught for over 200 decades.

Do tell Jorge, what sect of self-described Christianity do you adhere to and what makes you so certain you are right in that adherence?

If there is anything you hold sacred, imagine an ignoramus doing the same to it and then laughing about it.

It's a specious comparison you put forth because I can find no instance in reply #14 or subsequent replies by eddie where he "laughs about it"

That used to be the case 20 years ago or more, but most of the convents have closed their doors and there are too few nuns who do this kind of work anymore. Most nuns are now in nursing homes and few are taking their place. Yes, still a few monasteries doing this as well as making wine, but not many to assure a supply for everyone. Most of the wine actually does come from the local supermarket where the priest buys something to his personal taste. This was true even when I was an altar boy many decades ago. The wafers are mostly made by a commercial company to assure a constant supply.

I will get a clarification from William Donohue on this issue.

I am still outraged with NBC and have emailed them and will call them tomorrow!

he KNEW if you aren't Catholic... odds are that you DIDN'T GO TO CONFESSION!!!

Well mega Duh to the max...

and yes, you can confess to God any thing, any time you want, but that don't buy you Communion in the Catholic Church.

Since I can confess and receive forgiveness FREELY from Christ, WHY would I ever want or NEED to "buy" the communion from the Catholic Church?

What for?

The Bible is only to be taken literally in the places they want it to be taken literally. For example there is that whole divorce thing....

The Catholic Church is the Mystical Body of Christ, unifying the Church Triumphant (in Heaven) and the Chruch Militant (on earth). All validly baptised Christians may be members of the Church Militant. Even those who WANT to be but have not yet been baptized may be via the Doctrines of Baptism of Desire or Baptism of Blood. Since Our Lord only founded ONE Church - His Church, the issue is not as difficult as you might think. Our Lord said, " No one comes to the Father except through me.”. Either you are in His Church or you cannot get to heaven. The Literal Word of God.

Briar, you're not alone in your feeling about this Sacrament:

From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

John 6:66.

Read back and see what Jesus said, and how upset everyone was - "How can this man give us his flesh to eat? "

Who "buys" a Sacrament Jorge? What anti-Catholic book of lies are you feeding from?

And, the whole "whatever you bind or loose on earth is bound and loosed in heaven" thing that Christ gave to Peter.

Can't take that literally either, when that is what He said.

But, you see, creation took place in seven, twenty-four hour days.

Because of my faith in Jesus Christ, I stand by what I said earlier: It blasphemes all faithful Christianity.

"You'll note that in Life of Brian, Jesus Himself was played 100 percent, absolutely, utterly straight (in the only cameo appearance). The comedy has to do with poor Brian being mistaken for the Messiah -- which I guess is probably going to offend some folks, but it's not on the same level as committing sacrilege."

The whole movie, however, made fun of religious zealots, Romans, Jews and people with a lisp. The episode of "Committed" in question was quite respectful of Catholics but made fun of neurotic city dewllers. I don't see much difference. The reactions of some in this thread would make good fodder for an edition of FReeper Funnies. (and no, I'm not a Lousy DUmmie Troll). Apologies to PJ for hijacking his shtick.

very well annotated discussion of the history of both Catholic belief and those who disent from that belief.
****

That one is easy....if you aren't catholic then you are a heretic and should be gutted or beheaded. Its written in the cardinals and bishops ect. vows that they take.....AND they have proven they can do it...I believe it was called the Dark Ages..inquistions, crusades. Sounds to me like the same type of animal as Islam is just slumbering and waiting for her next chance.

The Protestant Age is over...there are no more protestants, no one is protesting a false religion anymore, they are joining her, and spitting on the blood of millions of Martys who died to get away from her.

Foolish to worry about a flushed cookie when the judgement for Idolatry, spiritual adultry and following a beautiful Arch-Angel named Lucifer will be far far worse.

Actually, Catholics do not believe that Protestant communion services involve a change either, as our theology requires a priest to actually confect a consecration. I've personally been of the opinion that, if we are right, it is for the best that you view your communion services as symbolic. I say this not out of triumphalism but merely as an interesting side note that I think tends to be overlooked in these discussions.

Respect does go both ways, and there are Catholics that do believe all non-Catholics are going to Hell. Personally, I prefer to go with the classic answer to that matter, which is that God alone knows the state of a soul and that He alone judges. It saddens me at times when I stumble upon these religious threads where respect seems to be going neither way. Such does little to convince either side, does much to push away both sides, and does much to push away lurkers who happen to be reading.

Jorge actually didn't say that.

That was another poster's hyperbole.

And if you don't believe in transubstantiation, Jorge, it would be wrong to participate in a ritual which you do not believe in. So it really was correct for you not to participate, and the priest did you a favor by warning you that you shouldn't.

Weird, all the Churches I know, and even the catalogues I've seen have the Hosts and wine made at Monasteries, or Convents.
