I had to shut down the WLR-1

Another WLR-1 jockey. :-) I'm probably one of a very few people here that knows what that is. I was an EW on the Berkeley, '80-'81.

EW from late 71 when they created the rating till I got out in early 74. When I first took over the equipment they didn't even have an EW watch stander in CIC. Which is probably just as well. Couldn't hear anything anyway. So I took off the waveguide end where the cable connected to the tuner for the upper band. Out came salt water :) The waveguide had a few quarts of saltwater in it. That equipment was a mess. The SLA-10 also didn't work at all, and the AS-899 antenna would not run at a decent speed. I must have lived up on the mast for a month working on that. Turned out that the antenna was miswired. When I fixed it in Rota Spain, the Chief took me out for beers :)
FWIW - in making sure I got the antenna number right, I came across this link http://www.usswaddell.com/History/Official_Documents/command_histories/1967.htm and it indicates they had the same problem.....
On our North Atlantic tour we spent time in the Barents Sea and we frequently got buzzed by Bear Deltas and also some Krivak and Kresta cruisers. Does the DON-2 and Big Bulge bring back memories?
